Different jobs?

what do you guys know about future jobs? because assassin, trader, pirate, bounty hunter, and explorer is good and all but i was hoping for more.
like cops, engineers selling their skills and fixing ships. and even jobs that are going to be on planets and cities like a hunter who sells meat and fur, or a miner who goes on planets and well...mines...
i mean the possibilities are endless....so how far are they going with this?

It's an action game, not an RPG so it'll be hard to do things like fixing ships. There will be mining, courier is an option, potentially so is spy/soldier/police. When first person is out DB is saying you'll be able to hunt game (don't know how profitable that'll be though).

You never choose a profession in some avatar creation menu in Elite. You just do the things you do.

If you mine a lot, then I guess you could call yourself a miner.
If you chase bounties, then you are a bountyhunter (or cop depending on how you wish to see it)
If you hunt animals on planets in a future expansion, then I guess you are a hunter.

At any given point you of course have the possibility to do something else.

FD will simply enable us to do things, what we then choose to do is up to us.

I think it could potentially be very profitable depending on what you hunt. ;)

Going after some huge exotic (and endangered) species for their eyelashes because some insanely rich and eccentric "businessman" wants them in his collection could be very profitable indeed. :D

Of maybe taking this rich individual on their own personal safari.

There will be luxury passenger transports in the game. If they are available to players, there is the option of running one and perhaps becoming a holiday tour operator!

Yes, doing repairs through space walks has been mentioned by David himself at different points in time. This is IMO one of the reasons why we won't have a "standard" 3rd person view. If you want to make spacewalks feel special you shouldn't be able to see the ship from the outside by just pressing a key (camera drones is of course something else). Instead you'll have to actually get into a spacesuit and go out there in person.

You can also do (in the finished game or in a future beta/gamma), miner, taxi driver, mercenary, illegal tradesman (bootleg runner), security.
Basicaly you can combine all of these and the ones you mentioned to do whatever you like. Sure there are limits but as more expansions will come out there should be more and more options.
As the game's multiplayer picks up there should be more group options availabe too.

you play what you want : mercenary, bounty hunter, trader, smuggler, pirate, privateer, scavenger etc. :D

oh my god, i can't wait to transport passengers, and he did mention something about being a stow away when walking becomes a feature.....

To scoop the remains of spaceships after the fighting, can also be a job

some one has got to do it.

I would like to be able to grapple a destroyed ship hull after a battle and tow it back to a salvage yard (so professionally speaking a salvager) this would make a nice new gams mechanic, towing ship parts around - would make docking a little more interesting.

It would be nice that when a ship is destroyed in battle, perhaps parts can be reclaimed, guns, engines, shield generators, modules etc.

You could then setup a nice little cheap parts store - one (not so careful :D) previous owner.

I think one of the things that attracts me to this game is the idea that it its going to be an open enough experience that you could assume a multitude of different jobs/rolls at different times. There has obviously been thought into supporting specific archetypes (trader, fighter, etc) but at no point is the game going to restrict you to doing one thing because that is all there is to do.

There are no classes or jobs or archetypes. You just do what you do...

There will be co-pilots both NPCs and other players.

This is why the bigger ships have been designed with more seats to begin with. Players having this ability won't be in the first release though, but I guess there is a chance that we will see NPCs filling out this role to begin with in some simple ways.

You can read the crew proposal over here:

You also probably want to see this interview with David himself, especially at the 9:30 mark. ;)
