why not give some of the other species, (thargoids or others), different warp capabilities and etc.
IE
a race that has massive hulking great ships and weapons but no good engines at all, not even engines rated for their own ships. in stead of warping and using sublight travel they fold the space between systems and choose where to warp into a system, so they can travel very quickly across large distances, but at a snail's pace in-system.
or,
a race that is almost entirely explorers, but also gamblers. they set course for a far distant star system and hope they don't run out of fuel. this is achieved by negative charge warp coils, that use less fuel at a distance of 100ly than they do on jumps of 1ly. this drive will completely empty the ship if used to get between close-by systems, but will leave you with enough fuel to get to a station or flail around and call for help. the optimal jump range is 90-100ly and if you go below that you're going to pay through the nose, since 100ly is a lot of fuel.
