I have been reading posts from people playing in OPEN mode. On one side CMDRs say other CMDRs ignore their attempts at communication and I read also posts from CMDRs who say that they cannot tell when another (real) CMDR is attempting to contact them because the same "click" is used to announce all types of comms messages. Apparently the comms annunciator click is very quiet and does not differentiate between texts from NPCs and real CMDRs. The system apparently also does not have a unique way to notify a CMDR that someone is trying to contact them via voice-chat so here is my suggestion:
I get it, the comms notification should not be intrusive since there is a lot of communication going on all the time. But it does need different tones to differentiate between NPC comms, real-player texts and real-player voice-chat requests so, on my call-phone I use the same, soft, hi-lo "ding-dong" chime used by major airlines as the "call attendant" chime as my text notification tone. It is so unobtrusive nobody ever hears it but me because I have trained myself to hear it. I suggest using the same "click" as has always been used for NPC comms and a soft doorbell-like cabin-attendant call chime or a similar, soft tone for real-player comms. A single, soft "ding" for real-player text messages and a dual "ding-dong" doorbell-like tone for voice-chat requests. o7
