Difficulty scaling

Hello all

I did a search on difficulty scaling but didnt find anything so I thought I would ask.

In my limited time in beta and gamma Ive just been pottering around in my bog standard Sidey raising money through system exploration.

Practically all of my encounters have been against very poorly equipped ships without shields (and I still cant kill them (come on posty, wheres my Hotas and EDtracker)).

Onto my question,

Does opponent difficulty scale in line with the class/ power of the ship we use or is it totally random?

There is no scaling. You come across whatever is out there. There will be times you need to run and other times you can laugh at your opponent.
 
The scaling is the Rank, a mostly harmless cobra is an easy kill and not that great in combat, but an elite.... don't even attempt it.

I have had my share of combat and the Elite Combat rating does tell you the quality of the NPC, and what equipment they have installed.

...and other times (like a couple of minutes ago) when you get interdicted and while you confidently start to line up your ship to once again show these pirate scums who's boss you suddenly see a whole swarm of missiles coming at you! EVADE! EVADE! Holy s....!

I don't get it, I can kill asps etc in an eagle. Cobras, everything so far except the anaconda I tried, it didn't end well.

They usually don't even get a shot on me, I don't need shields for non player fights. I can kill these ships in a stock eagle.
 
Difficulty scaling, well if you find it too easy then go looking for trouble.... go to a system and try and annoy every faction.. .. ..

That's exactly what I'm going to do :) Although I prefer to annoy things that give me money. I'm not sure if I just want to pwn authority vessals all day, not very profitable.
 
I've been taking out everything in my hugely upgraded Eagle - even Anaconda's with a tactic I found (I really need to ticket it, it's an exploit tbh!).

But yesterday I was attacked by a Sidey (it had to be as that was the only other ship in the system and I knew it was coming for me).
I wanted to finish my planet scan so hit full reverse to go right at it so it passes me - I'll finish my scan and have it in front of me.

Well blow me, he had my shields down in about 3 seconds. I was like, holy moly?!
So I gave up scanning to turn on him - I was dead before I even finished my 180 turn!
Probably no more than 6 seconds from full shields / hull to dead.

Basically that AI felt like the AI you get in the final tutorial mission - ruthless and deadly. Most AI ships can't hit a barn door, but this came completely out of the blue and took me by surprise.

So I think it really is random.
