Digital Keyboard in VR

I play ED in VR and typing to the Communications panel is tedious and interrupts the gameplay as I have to take my VR headset of to type. Would it be possible to actually have a digital keyboard in-game that appears in VR when a player opens the communications panel and then be able to use this keyboard to type a message to the communications text field by using a mouse.

+1 from me and probably about twenty dozen from the other suggestions about an on screen keyboard for VR use.

That is to say there has been a lot of suggestions/requests for an on screen keyboard in elite over the years, I'm just adding a virtual "vote" from all the people who contributed to those threads.

I'd be very happy with this, or just add dictation ability so you literally speak your sentences in the chat. that way I won't have to worry about even seeing a keyboard :D

An easy fix would be download typing tutored so you would never need to see the keyboard. Most of them are free. I watch other people type it is so hilarious. One or two finger typer.

Access to my keyboard during play is a bit difficult due to a lack of space. The keyboard lies on my left side and I have to physically pick it up and place it on my lap to type on it or shift my Joystick and throttle out of the way to make space for the keyboard. I have considered constructing a drawer under the table to house the keyboard. I play VR without my glasses on and to recognize the letters on the Keyboard, I have to put them on again, type the text, take the glasses of and replace my VR headset.
I loved ED before I got the VR headset, and loved it even more with VR. Unfortunately this lack of or slow communication has made me a loner in the wing, reducing the joy of the game tremendously.

LOL, You must have seen me. It is amazing what crap I can type by trying to type 'blind'
I don't even have a desk so yes lack of space is a lame excuse. I have a laptop and dual Flight sticks Saitek ST290 Pro and X52 Pro. All I do is lay my wireless keyboard on my lap and type. Nothing has to move other than a keyboard. All I need to know is the F key and J key to place my hand on the keyboard.

People buy typing tutor. Practice Practice and more Practice.

Unless restricted to the keyboard window, a mouse is probably not the optimal choice of input device if you have to find the cursor first.

I've been a touch typist for about 20 years, and typing with a VR headset on is still difficult. You actually rely on your peripheral vision for the placement of your hands and with a VR headset, you don't get that. So unless your keyboard has identifying markers on the keys that allow you to know your hand and finger placement before typing (mine doesn't), then you're kind of screwed to feel around and base everything on feeling slightly abnormal style keys like the Space bar, Return key, Backspace, Shift etc... which isn't great when the first letter you need to find is like a G or F, or U etc...

That said, I don't know if this is just ship specific, but in VR when I look down and to my left in the T7, there's a QWERTY keyboard in-game... so is it getting the usage out of this keyboard that you want? If so, how would you see the chat box if you're looking at this particular keyboard?

You can mark those keys your self. Without damaging the keyboard. A little tape something that feels different than non-keyed keyboard. To boot you don't have to have it on the major keys. I would do 5 and 8 and I would know to move my fingers down 2 rows.
