Dinosaurs Pre-Birds and plumage/skin colouration variation - musings for fun

First off, I'm really really enjoying JWE2. Dinosaurs looking just amazing and park building - what's not to like. I understand the lack of freeform building is frustrating for some but I'm having a great time.

Anyway...I'm trying to unlock the Indoraptor on the NW USA Challenge map, and as a result, spending quite a bit of time growing batches of new eggs to keep my park up, running and making money because BLIMEY Indie is an expensive goal. I've been hitting the 'random' button on modifying genomes for laughs but then I thought that might not be the right thing to do.

My other main hobby is bird-watching (my hobbies are either Very Indoors or Very Outdoors it seems) and well, birds don't do that. It's striking that within a bird species all the birds are very much the same colour and pattern, with very little variation. Off the top of my head, I suspect this has a lot to do with mating display, so potential mates can easily judge who is most splendid and worthy of gene-mingling. At the moment, I can't think of a bird species with colour variation in the wild, but I could easily be wrong (I'm not an expert in these things). However, within a particular bird species, colour/pattern does sometimes vary a tiny little bit by region - so for example a pied wagtail has a bit of variation in different parts of the world. But the main rule is born out by the many bird books available. You can fairly reliably identify a bird from it's plumage, behaviour and where it is, because each species has a pretty reliable set of characteristics.

So I think - and again, I'm not a dinosaur expert AT ALL - but to do it correctly, I should pick a colour and a pattern for each batch and stick with it? Do you think?

I should also emphasise, this post is for fun and chatter, and I'm really not trying to dictate how people should play their game.

Also, if there are other bird-watching gamers out there, helloooo o/

And please do let me know what you think, why I'm all wrong and why facing into an icy cold wind through binoculars trying to identify a duck 5 miles away is a stupid pasttime. ;)

I don’t see why real bird variation should impact the aesthetic variety you enjoy. There’s nothing wrong with randomized skins.

I often use the same coloration/pattern for the most clutches and then do a single breed with a much more colorated version of this species to represent a "male" one.
I often go by species that have one alpha male and many females like deer and such. I don't know exactly how it is with birds, but there are certainly similar swarms?

That's a cool idea!! I'm going to steal it when I get to sandbox! :)
