Dinosaurs should not die of old age

In the other game's campaign mode, I used to create dinosaurs and name them and even get attached to them. Now I know I'm going to do the same thing in JWE2 only this time I don't want my pets to die of old age. Sure they can die by getting killed by other dinosaurs just not of old age please.

About dinosaurs dying of old age, I always find it strange how time goes by so quickly, I even find it fun to wonder how old the human characters are after a few hours of gameplay.

I feel like there's just going to be more ways for those dinos to die, considering there's Vets in the game.

It might be Organ failure instead of old age this time around, something you can do surgeries on, but harder to survive as time goes on, very much prolonging the inevitable (though immortality would technically be possible, just incredibly rare).

The alternative I'd go for is the ability to move dinos from campaign to sandbox, where they can already be immortal.

I have to say this was one aspect of the campaign mode that really surprised me...... how short the lifespans of the dinos actually were in 'real time'.

I don't mind them dying from old age, because that's only natural...... but in my opinion the real time lifespans are just so unrealistically short. I say unrealistic because big creatures like the blue whale, and resilient creatures like crocs and white sharks all have lifespans of around 60-70 years and upwards, which is really not that much less than humans.

If I think of the original game, I would hope that the first animals I hatched on the first level would live at least long enough to typically be on the last couple of levels? I mean if 1x real time hour was 1x dinosaur year, that would actually be quite good I think? Or maybe shorten it to 30 or 45 mins if Frontier need it for gameplay balancing or something?

The timescale in JWE was a bit vague, but we got a monthly finance report every 10 minutes or so (it didn’t call itself that, but if you went into the control room to look at detailed finances there was a line that said “last month” or something like that with the total from the previous report). I never hard math’d the dinos age from that but the max lifespans were still pretty short before they patched them longer. In the novel, Wu explained that gen1 of any creature was a complete mystery until it hatched (like the needs stats in JWE, but you wouldn’t even know what you were hatching at all), then they would live about 6 months (about an hour gameplay if we go off the 10 min “monthly”), and that was part of the challenge: tweaking the genome to get healthier animals that live longer, more full lives.

I hope in JWE2 they can strike a better balance between depicting the challenges of starting the genetic journey vs. the payoff of reaching max genome (+any bonus).

Interesting info about what it said in the novel, I've read it through a couple of times but never noticed that! Perhaps the game was more true to canon than I thought.

Completely agree about the genetic journey challenges and payoff vs max genome though. The info in the JWE2 preview about the genetics being revamped does sound promising, so hopefully this will be alot better than in the first game.
