Disabling "space particles"

I know some people need them to "feel" the speed, but i always found them annoying. I mean, if i fly unshielded on light speed and see things pass by, why aren't they hitting me to death?

There should be an option to disable it just like there is one for orbital lines (that actually make much more sense).

Just point toward a sun and you can see the mess you make on your cockpit screen. I actually quite like them, but if people dont I agree there should be an option.

Run with FA off for a bit and then let me know your thoughts on this.

Although they could be replaced by a velocity indicator on the HUD, Frontier decided that they prefer doing it with space dust.

Just as i enable orbit lines in tough exploration situations, i'd enable this before going into battle. However, having them in peace time sucks. Also, you can't turn off FA in supercuise, so... yeah, there's velocity indicator for it.

+1 always bugs me.

Bugs me in Star Trek too......

Surely the cockpit canopy glass can give some sort of indication of motion instead (like it does for orbit lines), rather than dust motes.

I think the "space dust" is a HUD projection onto the canopy glass not real dust outside of your ship. When your canopy is breached, the dust doesn't get displayed.

If they add an option to switch this off, I predict it'll end up being largely unused feature - a bit like turning off orbital lines? Why? Because players will moan that the game does nothing to convey speed/movement, which will make SC even more "boring" (just like turning off orbital games makes the game prettier but makes navigation much more difficult and slow). In other words, I think adding the option is a wasted development effort that could hurt FD - though on a small, and time-limited scale. Sorry!

Really? I guess i need to test it... somehow. But anyway, if that's a hud projection, it should - or at least could - be switchable.

What makes you think it's unused? I use it all the time, turning it on only if i have some problems with navigation to the interesting unexplored target, and that only happens in really big systems or with gas giant moons.

Um, wait a sec, how would those moaning people moan about things they choose not to use? For speed in sc, there's speedometer. SC would hardly become more boring if it starts looking better. Anyway, it's totally on the same development level as the orbital lines switch, and it was a good switch.

I beg to differ. The ability to turn off the orbit lines was a much-requested and much-welcomed feature. I use them only in certain exploration scenarios, and have them disabled at all other times.

And I agree with the OP to a degree. Physically and realistically the particles make no sense, and if it's true they're a HUD projection, well, of course you should be able to disable them.

However, I think FD need to find a balance between having enough options to please the player base, and overloading the Functions menu...

I'd be fine even with a config file line, to be honest. Like with hud colors.

Actually, how do we get suggestions heard by devs? I'm starting to suspect that's the wrong part of forum... could someone move it please?

Maybe there is a way to set the colour of the particles to black, then they won't show up so much! ;)

That'd be super creepy. Best seen in hauler with its background sounds and weird engines.

Making them transparent, however...

I've always felt the same way. Its space, not a snowglobe.

There is some code in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml file inside your ED install, that mentions <FX> and <Feature>Debris</Feature>

I've not tried editing it, but i assume as this code is here it is possible to change the configuration, and maybe Frontier do plan on adding this to the games menu options at some point?

I would like Options.

It could be simple to have, just like the orbit lines option.
High, medium, OFF but like what was said earlier I'd be fine even with a config file line, Like with hud colors.

I'd rather have a more complex HUD setup with some speedtapes instead of dust, but a toggle would be good too. I used the Orbitals toggle to execute the hideous omnipresent yellow circles; though the "dust" doesn't bother me at all the option should be there for disabling it, especially as it's part of the HUD projection and not real space cooties. I have zero fear of a complex control setup; afaic there could be fifty more controls available to us and tweakable per ship. Turn Off MagicDust hardly counts as adding layers of complexity though.

Ok well, how do we get suggestions from here to devs? Do we just sit and hope that some of them will read this thread or something needs to be done additionally? In any case, that's a bump.

it does not have any effect on velocity streaks. like any other option in this file.
