Disappeared heat sink

Noticed today that I have only 2 heat sinks left of the 3 I started with, yet haven't used any.
Have it bound as a 2nd fire group and then as 2nd button intentionally so there's no mistakes (sometimes I like to learn from the oops moments :))
At no point has honking failed, so fire group hasn't changed.

So 2 questions...
1. Am i misunderstanding the fire group? And because the two groups use different fire buttons they're somehow combined as a single group in effect (in which case I should put heat sink to button 1 to ensure the firegroup separation is honoured)
2. Is there some special key binding/combination to specifically fire a heat sink that I might have pressed unwittingly?

Just trying to work out what has happened so I can avoid it happening again.

Cheers

I may be misunderstanding your post. So apologies in advance. By 'honking', do you mean the sound of the Discovery Scanner?

You use the same buttons on each fire group. You only have two 'fire' buttons. Each Fire Group changes what your Fire Buttons are used for. On your canopy HUD (when Hard Points are deployed or if you are using a Discovery Scanner) you can see on the left, Fire Button 1 and on the right, 2. When you select a different Fire Group the same Fire button's functions will change according to the ones you have selected for that particular fire group.

You may already know this but that's what I think you are asking about (?)

Don't assign to fire groups to avoid accidental use.
Instead assign a specific key or HOTAS button only.

yes, by honking I mean the discovery scanner. my setup is:
Fire Group 1: Fire Button 1 - Discover Scanner
Fire Group 2: Fire Button 2 - Heat Sink

My rationale was that to fire a heat I would need to first change fire group, and then hit fire button 2. I use keyboard and mouse so the fire buttons are mouse 1 and 2.

So when I say honking did not fail, I mean that each time I entered a new system I hit fire button 1 and the discovery scanner honked - therefore proving fire group 1 is active. So in theory, I can hit fire button 2 all I like and heat sinks will not fire - I'm 30 kylies in the black so don't really want to be experimenting.

I'm just trying to figure out how the heat sink could have accidentally fired. Had it been me clicking the button to change the fire group, then the next time I entered a system (a minute later since I'm buckyballing to catch back up) the discovery scanner would not activate and I'd have to change the fire group back to 1 to re-use the scanner - had that been the case, I would have no questions, but it didn't happen that way. Accidentally hitting the fire group button, then accidentally hitting fire button 2 and then accidentally hitting the fire group button is just not feasible :O

Don't have a HOTAS (I'm keyboard/mouse) - does a HOTAS present multiple fire buttons in the fire groups? Not even mouse 3 (click of scroll wheel) appears for me.

But you may have inadvertently answered my question - "Instead assign a specific key" <- means it is possible and maybe it is already bound. Now I need to find it.

Ok:

Numbers across the top are groups 1-4
When in group 1 the bindings for the other groups won't work etc. For example in the image if fire group 1 is active pressing button 2 will fire chaff but if group 4 is active button 2 equals interdictor.
But if you have fire button 1 and 2 bound on the same vertical column then they will both be active.

I hope that makes sense, there are some youtube vids showing it better than I can type it. For what i'ts worth I think you are correct in what you think :p

Two other things I'll float here is that Heat Sink Launchers can malfunction and randomly fire if they take too much damage. The other advice is check your bindings, heat sink can be set to a specific key as you mention, it may have been bound and inadvertently pressed. Actually I heard a story about a cat firing chaff that way once by walking on the keyboard :p

As above best advice is not to have it on a fire group at all and simply have it bound to a specific key or button. For keyboard I'd advise numpad minus key or something that doesn't get easily pressed. Avoid binding to alt, tab, and things like that (I made that mistake a few times) :D
Yes the bindings menu is a mess but it's well worth taking 10 minutes and going through point by point working out what it means and if you need/want it :)

Thanks for the reply. I agree something over in the num pad.....not minus though, that's already bound as boost after a few close calls tabbing in comms and finding myself hurtling towards impending doom (or should that be boom?) :D

All modules are 99 or 98% so malfunction seems unlikely. Been swapping keyboard between pc and work laptop so probably hit the launch key without realising.

I use the space bar - if I need a heatsink I don't want to look for a key - but then maybe I'm making too many mistakes

OK, an update....
First off, my fire group is like this:

2nd. I found the binding was set to fire heat sink on "v". ergo, it is likely I pressed v by accident. I have now bound it to numpad "/" so it's out of the way by still accessible.

Finally....I got it back? Had 3 crashed today when searching gal map. After the 2nd crash and 3rd log in, my heat sink had miraculously been restored and I now show 3 again:

I hope I don't ever need it as it would feel like cheating :(
