Disappointed

I created this forum account just for this thread.

I played the original Elite back when it first came out for the Spectrum 48 back in the 80's. It was the greatest game of my youth and I miss it.

I was excited when I heard that it was being released and although I couldn't take part in the kickstarter (finished before I had heard) I was looking forward to player.

Sadly, my machine misses, but not by much, the minimum recs.

This is the cause of my disappointment. Back in the day, the devs managed to squeeze everything they wanted to do into less than 48k of memory. A truly staggering achievement that led to incredible inclusivity and was a technical masterpiece.

Alas, I only wish the modern devs had the same ability to stretch the boundaries of what is possible and have gone for the 'MOAH POWAH!" route.

Now, I'm not expecting sympathy, but instead of paying 50 pounds (FIFTY!) for the game, I'm going to have to spend a couple of hundred on updating/replacing my system and then buy the game.

Such is life.

I spent 1600 euros on a PC + stuff (headphones, screen etc) + the kickstarter(s).

Is indulgence one of the sins?

They pushed the hardware that was available at the time - they're doing the same again... not sure why that should be disappointing!

Post your specs. The game will be optimised more on release and that may allow you enter the game, with lowest settings of course. Don't give up.

If you post your specs, an experienced user may be able to guide you. Never know.

I've updated my machine several times in the past just so I can play certain games. It's part and parcel with being a PC gamer.

I haven't had to update my machine for this game but I did buy a T-flight Hotas X and then a X52 pro. I'm now looking at getting the Occulus Rift now too.

That sucks, if you post what you have I am sure someone may be able to guide you on what to upgrade and maybe where to get it on the cheap.

Having said that, I hope you checked the specs before buying! I can't tell from your post if you are just disappointed you can not play it or because you bought it and can not play. Those specs have been listed for some time and from what I gather they are pretty forgiving compared to other games out right now.

If you have an old computer you actually cant play any games that is released whit todays technical and graphical standard.

You cant be disappointed at the developers because they follow todays standard.

Only a couple hundred pounds? That's pretty impressive for what you think are just "updates".

I have a computer I built almost 5 years ago that has run ED since Alpha without a problem. Sure, the FPS is around 15 in dogfights and 30 everywhere else, but that was 5 years ago and it wasn't even top of the line then.
Specs:
AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition Quad-core (3.2GHz)
Asus M5A99X EVO Motherboard
XFX Radeon HD 4890 1 GB GDDR5
8 gig RAM Corsair Vengance (I think DDR3 1600)
Windows 7 64-bit

If you want to run one of the recent video cards, you'll have to get a new motherboard. Which means a new CPU. And you might as well update your RAM anyway. And that's more than just a few hundred pounds.

And if your computer is older than 5 years, ain't it time for a new one anyway? Go crazy. I bought all my parts off Newegg and paid US$1,000 for them. And it's for this game and The Witcher 3.

If your system can't play ED right now, then you really REALLY need to upgrade anyway.

I'm playing with a laptop that's close to 3 years old, a 10 inch model with 6GB RAM, it does have an i7 and a GTX650M but it's by no means a heavy lifter. I do have to go to low details, but the game runs smoothly.

Also, there are definitely more optimizations coming up. Be patient. We have had a massive framerate increase from premium beta 1 to PB2 and Beta 1, so it's not unreasonable to expect further improvements.

But really, do consider upgrading. It's not fair to expect Elite Dangerous to push new boundaries while running on PCs that are more than 4 years old.

I know you've already shelled out (so there isn't much you can really do until/unless the devs support a new lower minimum spec, or you upgrade), but you can play Oolite, an Elite clone- for free right now, if you want to scratch the itch.

Personally, I'm very happy the new Elite is pushing technical boundaries. Supporting Oculus Rift and launching with immersive and detalied graphics, this is a game of the time and of the near future. It's the kind of game that if all goes well- could influence the current generation of gamers just as much as the previous games did with the older generation.

Elite is growing up. Let it stretch its legs and flex its muscles.

They pushed the hardware that was available at the time - they're doing the same again... not sure why that should be disappointing!

Not only that - they helped pushing hardware developers to create better and better hardware and helped influence their direction.

The exact same thing might happen now again. If there weren't companies pushing the envelope like Frontier, we'd probably still have 8 bit 64k ram computers.

I also played the original Elite and games have been a hobby for me since I was four (yay - pong), but I'm really excited to have something to look forward to.

For more than a decade, complacency and compatibility with consoles have held development back.

ED in combination with OR gives me a glimmer of hope I'll get exciting technology to spend my money on during the next two years.

A BBC micro model B cost 400 quid in 1984 ? In today's money that's about a grand. So it's amazing what £1000 worth of kit can run these days :)

The game ran ok on my old core 2 duo with cheap gfx card. And that was before the performance bumps of standard beta. That was under the min specs.

Maybe just a few choice upgrades are all thats needed!?

Its worth telling us what you have now, I/we can help!

Currently playing on a mid-2010 macbook pro (Windows 7 via bootcamp). 4GB ram, 2 core duo cpu and Nvidia 320M graphics. Smooth (ish) most of the time but not a gaming rig by any means and still able to play with graphic options at lowest settings.
Son has a 6-core rig for gaming - much better but hard to drag him off it!!

and the original Elite (disk) for BBC micro was £18 which with inflation is bizarrely, £50 :)

I bought an entirely new PC just to play Elder Scrolls: Oblivion because I loved Morrowind so much. If Elite means to you what it does to the rest of us you will starve yourself for 6 months to have the ability to play.

It will be worth it!

:D
