Discovering new astronomical objects

This must have been asked before, but I can't find it... (I also don't have a lot of time on my hands to look, or play ED for that matter)

When you discover a "New Astonomical Object" what exactly does that mean?
Is it the first time you have discovered it? Or has no-one been there before?
The reason I ask is because I found a lot of these quite near to where you start off in the game!

Also, I'd like to find something that nobody's been to, and get a "first discovered by..(me).." onto the game. How do we know when we've achieved that?

First time you've discovered it. Happens when you look upon a system's core star upon warping in and happens when you use your ADS. Every body could have been explored by someone else previously, but it's the first time you've come across it.

When you select a body from the system map, if it simply says "unexplored" with no CMDR name, you might be the first to discover it. First-discovered status isn't granted until you turn in the data to Universal Cartographics, so someone may have beaten you to it but not yet sold the data. In any case, be the first to do a detailed surface scan and sell the data, and you're name will forever be etched on the system map. You'll know you're the first because a notification will pop up when you sell the data that lists first-discovered bodies.

There is "honking the horn" , the general system wide scanning you do via your fire button(whatever you set it to).
Then there are the individual scan of system bodies(like stars/planets/moons)
If you look in system map and no one is credited with it, then you can scan it, and providing you survive to sell the data, and do it before anyone else, it will be "Discovered by ..." you

Remember, it is not the 1st person to scan who gets the label, it is the first to sell data on that system !!!!!!

If you surface scan an object (star/planet/moon) and there's no "First discovered by .." just the objects name you're probably the first to discover that object unless someone else has been there but hasn't sold the data yet. It's the first to get back and sell the data that gets the "First discovered by ..." tag.

remember if you take shields, you can switch them off once you are about 500 LY from the bubble, to reduce heat, you can also switch off other things like cargo hatch and power dist
just leave on : FSD , thrusters, life support, advanced and detailed scanners, power plant(can't be switched off). the radar sensor I leave on, others switch off.

You can take repair systems as well, they dont weigh anything and you can turn them off until you need them.

if you are a beginning explorer you might make a few mistakes and they can come in handy.
