Discovery scanner and cartography credit.

When I “honk” with my discovery scanner, is that where I get the credits from, when I sell the information to the cartographer, or is it only when I acacan unknown planets/stars/belts?

You get basic credits for the honk, you need to scan the body to get extra credits (plus first discovery if appropriate), if you have a DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner)equipped you get a bit more info and more cash again.

So for max payout on a system, discover every body (with an ADS or manually with a lesser disco scanner), and scan them all with a DSS fitted. If you do a partial scan of a system you cab go back & do a more complete job later if you want.

This might help :

PS.
As a very rough guideline, you'll need to lock up and approach Stellar Bodies to a certain distance to have the Scanner start working.

Black Holes : ~5Ls
Tiny Moons or Neutron Stars : ~10Ls
Small Planets : ~25Ls
Large Planets : ~50-100Ls
Small Gas Giants : ~150Ls
Large Gas Giants : ~500-1000Ls
Small Suns : ~1000-2500Ls
Large Suns : ~5000Ls or more

Note that Resource Belt Clusters still pay 0 Credits, although they afford a 1st Discovery Bonus for some reason (Bonus = 0 Cr ;) ). So these represent the only truly worthless Objects in Exploration it seems.
Scanning Objects that already have a 1st Discoverer listed will pay their base value, being the 1st Discoverer yourself yields the 50% 1st Discovery Bonus.

The mechanical Exploration flow looks like this :

Advanced Discovery Scanner was Honked, so I get the full overview of the System.

System Map with an Unexplored Planet. Already has a 1st Discovery but I've never scanned it, never been in this System before.

Target the Planet and fly towards it in SuperCruise.

Now my Scanner is in Range to begin scanning the Planet.

Scan complete...

As a Result, the Details of the Scan (Advanced Discovery Scanner and Detailed Surface Scanner in this Example) are now visible in the System Map

Wow, thanks for the awesome information, both of you!

I have a DSS installed. I’m doing a 327 system jump, atm, so sometimes I’ll stop and scan, or sometimes I’ll just keep jumping. If there a nav beacon, and unknown stuff, I’ll always scan the beacon.

Ah, k... Beware that scanning a NAV Beacon does not produce any results you could sell later on.
It also never provides DSS Data, only basic Data for all Objects in the System. It's like a free Service from the System to provide basic NAV Data.

You can still Detail-Scan any Objects inside such a populated System (only inhabited Systems have these NAV Beacons) after you scanned the NAV Beacon though.
Those can be sold, for as long as you're selling at least 20+ LY away.
