Been away from the game for a long time but felt like playing again. Unfortunately can't seem to get my scanner working. Went in to options set DS to various keys and set it in the console to a fire group but still nothing. What the heck am I missing? Very frustrated at having to do this again after all this time.

Searched them. Tried everything they said. Still no joy. Assign keys thro options. Assigned fire group and no scanner working.
You definitely should watch some tutorials on the new systems, before you start with the new bindings.
You need at least a binding to switch between Combat HUD mode/Analysis HUD mode.
DS works in Analysis mode.

Since you say "Never heard of that" about analysis mode then perhaps you didn't read / watch very far.
Assuming that you are not having us on then you should know that there are now two "HUD Modes" - Analysis and Combat. Some things only work in one of the modes.
Your discovery scanner is now built-in (did you notice the spare slot in Optional now?) and only "honks" in Analysis HUD mode.
The setting-up use of the new exploration systems would take too long to detail in this reply but I did write it up as an answer to someone and now it is in the Guides sub-forum (and includes demo videos). If you want to spend a couple of minutes sorting your system out it is at:

Used to be simple. Drop into system and hit key bound to DS. When did it change? As I said been away from game for a while.

Already check the vids out but they don't say which button to press to change modes. I even went into options/controls and had a look. Could not find Hud Switch. I have been trying to figure this out since last week so this wasn't my first stop. Thanks for the help offered so far even if it is where I have been already. I even tried to old random key selection thing. Just looks like one more try and write the game off as dead.
Controls->Mode Switches->Switch HUD Mode
It isn't hard - look under "Mode Switches" - "Switch HUD Mode"
