Discovery Scanner [Weekly Update] - 04/04/2022

@Paul_Crowther Just because you don't have anything to announce doesn't mean you shouldn't share as much information as you can. Regarding account transfers for example, many Cmdrs including me would appreciate some information about what the difficulties are. It doesn't have to be excessive granular details but some reasonable information about the type of challenges that you are facing. This would foster a sense of openness and would build trust. You never know, some Cmdrs might even be able to help. Just saying you have no information annoys people and makes them suspicious of your intentions. So please, talk to us about the console account transfer situation.

This all feels vaguely familiar.

There we go.

I'm feeling particularly lazy about fdev's communication or lack thereof.

< insert meme for "I'm sorry, i somehow gave you the impression that I care what players think" from perspective of fdev >

I echo the sentiment about wanting news on upcoming developments, or at least the confirmation that there are upcoming developments, aside from defect fixes.

I think ED deserves a thorough reinvigoration of its core mechanics, and a bunch of additional content.
They did confirm on stream that there is new development planned, some of which they would reveal ahead of time, and some of which wouldn't be. FDEV have previously launched new features and allowed the player base to discover them - so who knows what lies in store.
A wholesale rewrite of the core mechanics wont happen - although they are still working through the engineering feedback they gathered last year.

With any luck, they'll reveal well in advance new game mechanics so we dont have a repeat of the waste of time exo biology's mini game was. And not keep that secret until the last minute.

Keeping the existence of certain missions or certain hidden items is fine. It makes no sense to keep game loops/mechanics secret, and it doesn't do them any good to find out when it's way too late that the thing you've been working on and potentially based a lot of things around is not well received by players. Unless they started actually play testing stuff internally all of a sudden.

I dont think they will keep game mechanics secret, but previously - FDEV have kept a number of things secret to be discovered by the community - for example The existance of Thargoid ships and that they will interdict you - (Imagine being the first commander to be interdicted) : The existance of thargoids themselves was hinted at, but the ships themselves weren't announced. I think some of the bigger thargoid ships weren't announced either when they got included.
Another great example of unannounced content was in update 11 - a brand new criminal faction (The Consortium) - important enough to be mentioned in the Codex, not not announced in any form by FDEV.
So while FDEV might well announce new features and updated mechanics, there might be new content that people just discover.

....

I am not sure how they could have usefully revealed the original and highly inappropriate version of the exobiology mini game IIRC it was in the Alpha test about as soon as the exobiology was, what we have now is more of a waste of time than that was as it does nothing but spin pixels but at least it isn't a twitch gaming test.

A rewrite isn't necessary for all game loops. The improvements for some can be in the form of add-ons, i.e. a dialogue box for piracy interaction, a bounty hunting screen showing the highest bounties per system/quadrant, an actual smuggling game loop. I don't see that happening either, but I'll still mention it's worth doing.

This somehow doesn't sound as exciting as it looks from this post. It just looks like lack of information and communication like for example all the little changes happening as per balance and we are never told about them - such as tweaks to thrusters, plasma weaponry, power distributors and so on which they could've added in the patch list in a from of changes for example - "the plasma weapon's such and such damage output was increased from 98% to 100% " But we never get proper list of changes and there always missing information that you have to guess and try in order to reveal. Very archaic and cryptic ways of communication that doesn't add at all to the enjoyment of the game.

Ah well looking forward to another few months of radio silence.
Thursday stream will tell us nothing as usual.

My mileage obviously varies.
Not being told about minor changes that I barely notice the effect of doesn’t have any effect on my enjoyment of the game.
Changes that have a more substantial affect on how an existing aspect of the game works need to be communicated preferably with a before and after explanation.
Changes that bring in new things should be communicated unless they are part of a surprise or puzzle.

i played yesterday and odd was very jerky
I played last week, or the one before, doing some PoI grinding. Totally random thing. More than half of them had bugs, some major. Including buried door or non spawning quest item/NPC. At least the non spawning item/NPC can be fixed by relogging.
But yes, the amount of bugs I encounter everytime I boot Odyssey is.... quite jarring. I didn't play it for about a year, hoping they'd fix it, so I guess I'm not "used to" those bugs like people who "kept faith" and played for a year.

On the other hand, I rarely find bugs that bother me. The worst one I have seen recently is a flying corpse (he got shot while running).
