Discrepancy between EDDiscovery Route Finder and In Game 'Route Plotting Failed'?

I'm having a problem with understanding how the route finder in EDDiscovery works as compared to the in-game route plotter.

I've chosen to go to Terra Madre (Hypiae Aip KX-I c23-1) in my 58ly Asp Explorer, I'm currently in Trapezium Sector AF-Z c5 and EDD shows a route of 127 jumps but there are a couple of odd 'WAYPOINT' entries. When I use the in-game plotter it says 'route plotting failed'. I've gone along the route in-game and the system after where EDD shows the first WAYPOINT entry (Oochorrs BR-K d9-0) is where the route plotting fails.

I'm assuming that there's a jump needed that's longer than 58ly and that's what's causing the failure? Is there a way to get EDD to show me a route that I can make? Or is it simply impossible to travel in certain directions without a longer jump range? Is there a way to measure distance between two stars?

Your jump range will change depending on the amount of fuel you carry and cargo etc. Make sure you have set the correct jump range for any route plotter you are using, and when you use the in game plotter that your range matches the range in the route plotter.

When I was last out in the black exploring I sometimes had to break down the journey into smaller chunks. I was still able to make it to the same location but for some reason it was too hard for the game's plotter to work out the longer distance.

Yeah I've noticed that. In te meantime I've travelled all the way to the system on the route before the WAYPOINT entry and the next system is in fact 71ly away - so I need to use a 25% FSD boost to make the jump - I'm hoping that will allow me to continue

The other thing is, EDDiscovery can only route via stars it knows from EDSM, if there are stars on the route not in EDSM and hence not in EDDiscovery your route may be different using the in game route plotter, the ingame route plotter only plots to 20kly in fastest mode and 1kly in economy mode, the EDDiscovery route plotter may plot unnecessary diversions.

EDDiscovery draws a straight line between the two endpoints, then it tries to find a star it knows about close to the line every xly, where x is the jump range you entered.

If it can't find one it'll say "WAYPOINT" and leave it to you to try to find something at around the coordinates given, there may or may not be something there so the route may or may not actually be viable.

The in-game plotter tries for an actual route you can fly so if there isn't a star where EDD says "WAYPOINT" the in-game plotter will fail.
