Discussing Pro/Anti - Piracy Methods

would an EMP even work against a space hardened combat vessel?

i find the best solution to piracy is DRM - Deadly short Range Missile attack! just try escaping when you have a belly full of heat seekers launched at you from 100 meters ;)

Isn't that obvious sir?

Clearly only the pirates/murderers have the harsh time here, can't you see?

All those nasty traders charge their FSD while they try to type/use voice chat to request their surrender, and they get away...and Of course.... It's not like there is an anti 'interdictor' too... Errr... Right?

We do need those FSD Scramblers ASAP!

EDIT: woa guys, emp? You want to kamikaze and kill both ships by frying all electronics and let both pilots freeze and sofucate in the cold dark space? Ohh my suuucchhh evil.... I LOVE IT

Ah - the poor put-upon pirates of the galaxy are so hard done by - what a dire existence they must endure....

Regarding EMP - I don't think we'll see one as it would probably be considered OP (especially if it disabled a ship completely for a length of time).

Interdiction ghosts, Hardened Cargo Holds (more resistant to Limpets) Shielded Holds, (Cargo doesn't accurately show up on scan.) Cargo insurance.

Gravity Well, lets Pirates mass-lock larger ships. Credit Transfer, lets a trader pay off a pirate without losing mission critical cargo.

Friendship Drive. Turns Pirates into nice people who no longer want to steal.

you're probably right about it being OP, still would be interesting if a balanced counteraction was developed. EMP that only effects EMP's perhaps?

to me, a non projectile emp sounds like it would just emp it self.

Let's call it a disruptor, then. EMP was just the word that popped into my head. I'm sure someone can figure out a scientific was in which a beam weapon could overload your power supply/distributor for X period of time... Doesn't matter what you call it, what matters is the affect and the potential uses.

You mean, as apposed to blowing it up? The idea is to pu tin the same amount of effort as one would to blow ship up - but, the victim doesn't die (a bounty avoided), and you have time to get the hatch open and scoop the cargo.

The victim eventually recovers, ship intact, and docks at next station grumpy, with less cargo, but 100% intact.

I just find it laughable that someone in a combat ship that only attacks trading ships that have zero chance of defeating them in combat calls that same trader a "coward" for seeking to evade having their ship destroyed.

.... and, of course, the existence of an effective counter-measure to its use.

Yup - shields and your own guns... Higher rated/higher class powerplant/distributers would also be harder to take down.

They are merely another weapon, they don't damage your hull, however. They take shields down as normal, then instead of damaging hull, they take down a "system" as though it were a hull. At 0%, the ships powerplant is overloaded/distributer fuses popped/whatever, and a reset period of, say, 3-5 minutes is needed for it to kick back in.

Yes, there is the possibility of ganking in some ways, but really, that's already possible.

It also means there is potential for kidnapping missions, for example.

"Hi CMDR, we got word that the head of Impederiance War and Finance department (Presidents wife) is being flown to system Comegetsome in a Python. We need someone with the skill to knock it's systems out so we can board and take them prisoner, this could turn the tide of the war - you are th eonly one we know capable of such a mission!" blah blah...

It puts the victim (as you put it) at the mercy of the attacker. I doubt that many players will be happy with weaponry that allows their attacker to toy with them (as cats do with mice) for a period of time. You talk about piracy - this tool would not be restricted to pirates and would therefore find "emergent" uses that may be quite unpleasant.

Nope - if you have a disruptor, I would like to be able to counter it.

A delay on reuse would be meaningless in the scenario where the attacker was working as part of a group, therefore group ganking / griefing would be facilitated.

Boarding is a later expansion - we'll see how it is balanced so as not to be too much in favour of the boarder or boarded.
