Elite / Frontier Discussion - Reaching For The Stars

Right, I think it's an ample time to kick off another of these discussions. I won't drown you with another introduction but instead summarise the intent of this thread. I'll post a space-themed question in which you're free to answer anyway you like - what you say can be game-related, fantastical musings from your mind's eye or structured around the real world and universe around us. Simple stuff.

Without further ado:

Question: If you had the option to make a 25-year trip to a distant planet (where there may or may not be life) or live the rest of your days on Earth, what would you choose?

that depends on if i get to take anyone with me. if so then absolutly.

Yep that sums it up for me as well. Mind you, it would depend on what was waiting for me on the distant planet :D

I mean, if there was nothing there when we got there, I may get lynched by my shipmates:eek:

I agree with bananascope too, with the added proviso that I can choose whoever I like to take with me ;)

i like it when people agree with me, it makes me feel loved :)

Do you think you'd be able to sustain being in the same vessel as someone for 25 years?

if it was a loved one im sure, however once the journey starts we'd have no choice but to get along cos theres no stopping! :)

I would say yes. Angelina might not be so chuffed, but she'd be knocked out until well after takeoff. Even if we got to Alpha Centauri and the planets there were not inhabited there would still be exploring and science to be done, and your name would go down in history. There's also the chance that a breakthrough in propulsion tech will take place part way into the journey, and someone comes to give you a lift as they pass by.

This is what I was thinking, though I would be a bit annoyed if I'd just spent 10 years getting somewhere and then an improvement in tech means someone else comes along in a fraction of the time (especially if I'm still on the journey!) - but I guess there is no escaping that.

Didn't the original back story for Elite have something about sleeper ships and generation ships on long journeys? There were big fines for interfering with the poor sods. Personally speaking, I'd be chuffed to bits if someone showed up with warp drive to cut years off my journey. It would be a bonus, not a deal breaker.
