Disk Write Error

Hi All,

Please let me know if this is in the wrong area.

So, the problem started with the first hotfix after Oddssey was released, I have no idea why but I cannot update / even run Elite anymore. I've been getting Disk write error through steam.

Now I've gone through all the repairs (clear download cache / make sure admin on all folder and read only is off / verify integrity etc), changed which SSD its installed on (both new with over 500gb spare), reinstalled 3 times and so on.

All it does is download all the files and leave it in the steam temp download folder and not transfer them across, so I tried to copy all across but still no joy.

If anyone has any thoughts please could you let me know.

Thanks.

Do you have SSD or HDD drive?

Try this article as well:

The disk write error can happen when:

  • The drive or Steam folder is write-protected.
  • There are defects in the hard drive.
  • Your antivirus or firewall blocks Steam from downloading and saving data.
  • There are corrupt or outdated files in the Steam directory.

Check your antivirus. Since the first hotfix, my antivirus erase the exe, and always I tried to downoaled it again I got the disk write error. I did an exception and it is working fine now.

I had similar when updating with it chucking up CRC errors every time I ran the installer. Checked the disks, did all the stuff I could think of until "Stuff it" and slapped in a spare M.2 drive I had purely for the Elite files.

No issues since...

What Faykan said. Every time i have disk write errors on steam, i just disable my antivirus shields for the duration of the install, and it works like a charm.

Hi All,

Solved it!

Thanks for the comments, it was a my AVG in the end I did the exception and disabling with no changes. BUT I completely uninstalled it and put a different one on and it finally was able to finish downloading and installing.

Ta very much

Yeah I use Avast ... AVG is all well and good, but it proved to be more obstructive than Avast has been for me.

The best antivirus software is common sense. Never open content that is not from a source you do not trust.

And for all kinds of desasters, always have a backup ready.
Never bother without recover.
