Dismiss or Not To Dismiss Ship on High-G Planet?

I accidentally stumbled upon a piece info which said if i go too far from the ship on SRV, it will automatically Dismiss itself. I have been dismissing my ship when gathering mats in places such as Crashed Anaconda, Jameson, Bug killer etc because the terrains are relatively smoother.
During my recent visits to Crystal Shards sites I dared not to dismiss because the terrain was rough to say the least. So there were times when I had to land somewhat at distance and drive to site. If i recall correctly the longest I drove from landing zone to shard site was about 4km. Had no clue that going far would dismiss the ship. Now I am thinking what would have happened if I did drive too far on those extreme terrain and ship decided to dismiss? Could it land itself at the same place or even further away or try to land anyway on rough terrain?

So now my question is what if I am on a high-g planet exploring in SRV and just driving around, following valley, climbing mountain etc without any time stress, how far can i go before ship dismisses itself? And what are the chances that autopilot will land the ship fine against extreme gravity or I watch the ship in horror getting pancaked?

In my experiences, your ship will self-dismiss around 2 km or just over that.

EDIT: I've heard rumors that auto-pilot can "pancake" when it tries to land on the surface of high G once recalled.

Test To Do:
1. Land on Low G planet.
2. Continue driving SRV till ship is auto dismissed.
3. Note the distance at the moment ship was dismissed.
4. Recall ship.

If ~2+ km is really the range, I have to keep that in mind next time exploring planet side. 2 square km still lot of space to drive around.

IMO the chances of someone (1) finding me and (2) following me all the way down to the bottom of the gravity-well of a very high-G planet to shoot up my ship while it is parked on the surface is low enough that I think I might just leave the ship parked.

Unless it's a Beluga, those things are just space-coffins.
Pun intended for Rick? :D
I am beginning to learn Rick = Beluga. :)

Just bring big shields and a decent amout of hull (just in case) and you be fine even if it does crash :)
So the hull/shield damage from planetary landing is not % based such as the case for modules? That means just load up on hit points instead of resistance and I will be good.
I like 4 military slots of Crusader. Looks like I can push hull points quite high. Of course it sacrifices jump range but not as much as I thought it would.

Yep. Impacts (including ramming) do absolute damage, and ignore resistances.

If I recall correctly, the auto-dismiss distance is a little over 2 km. I haven't tested to get a precise number though.

I've avoided dismissing mine in high-G environments, but I can answer about rough terrain. The ship tries to pick a flat spot that's fairly nearby, and if it can't find a suitable landing spot, it will hover instead. You can still re-dock to it, if you can get in position. That's sometimes the tricky part. It may choose to hover over a spot that you can't reach with the SRV in the current conditions. In that case, dismiss again, drive to another spot, and recall again.

Two incidents convinced me to not dismiss in high G environments. First was, as Orvidius pointed out, a hover situation that took a few tries to correct. The other, more of a 'what have I done' moment, when I watched my old AspEx slam down, bounce then slam down again. That one involved taking her home for some TLC and interrupting a voyage to the rim.
