Dispersion Missiles Bounce Off

I must have watched at least a dozen videos on using dispersion missiles and I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. Every time I find an asteroid that seems like it has sub-surface items I want to go get, I fire a dispersion missile and hold down the mouse button while it's in flight but the missile never actually drills. It just bounces right off the rock. I have fired over 200 of these suckers and not one ever worked. I heard somewhere there is an icon in the nav menu I should be looking at somewhere to guide me where to aim but I haven't been able to find that. Can someone walk me through how to actually aim and get these things drilling? Thanks!

I'm guessing your using fixed sub surface missile launchers. OK if your in a medium ship. Personally I use turreted ones they aim alot
Better.
Its about hardpoint placement.
If you've other weps and lasers etc could be overlapping sights.
Go back to base get some turreted ones and then look at placement over your ship. You want em at the front or top or underneath near front. Not at back etc.
The rock ideally your aiming at is stationary but they ain't most of the time so you have to aim with that in mind...as you fire the rock rotates. Also are you highlighting the subsurface spot or surface....surface require an abrasion blaster again well placed not interfering with subsurface launchers. Deep core launchers also needs to be well placed. Plus mining lasers if you have em fitted.

Nothing you said is really helpful. I'm trying to figure out why the missiles are bouncing off. Obviously there is a step I'm missing.

Are you sure you are on the correct side of the asteroid? If you are you should be able to see the right spot to hit.

I have absolutely no clue if I am or not. Again, I'm missing some big step in the process here. I've tried watching videos on youtube about how to use the missiles but they all just show the user flying up, firing a missile, then talking about how to drill. The biggest step of all...where and how to drill is never, ever, explained.

target the subsurface deposit you wish to drill
by either pointing at it directly or picking it from the menu in the right ui
don't confuse abrasion blaster for subsurface missile
make sure your on correct side of asteroid
fire dead centre of fiisure hold down fire from the moment you fire do not release fire button at all till drilling commences and even then don't let go immediately wait youll see
if bounce wrong side or wrong object type
that's it about it eeze peeze lemon squeezzy

How do I know where the deposit is?

by either pointing at it directly or picking it from the menu in the right ui

SPECIFICALLY where should I look for it in the menu? SPECIFICALLY.

don't confuse abrasion blaster for subsurface missile

I'm not. I know the difference between the two and how they are used.

make sure your on correct side of asteroid

SPECIFICALLY how would I know where is or isn't the right side?

that's it about it eeze peeze lemon squeezzy

Obviously, it isn't. :(

Are you using Prospector limpets?
Left panel, contacts tab.

Yes. I fire the prospector limpet and when I find an asteroid with something inside I want (low temp diamonds, etc.) I can see the deposits going inside. From there I don't know what to do. I pull up the left menu with the limpet targeted and I don't know what to do from there.

can you find a subsurface deposite if so screen shot yourself with it targeted like any other object
they should show up once waved and prospected
you must have full pips to weapons btw in order for missile to work

Ah...that might be the issue. I'll double check that next time I'm in the game.

Again though, I heard that there is some sort of icon to reflect that deposits are surface or sub-surface and I can't seem to figure out where that would be

it says on the asteroid sub surface deposite when targeted the same way a surface deposite would show for abrasion blasting
or in the navigation panel I haven't mined in an age unless they have changed it somehow

Sigh...I've already explained that NOT ONE OF THESE VIDEOS HELPS! NOT ONE. Please read what I already wrote. NOT ONE OF THESE VIDEOS HELPS! They all just show the user flying up, firing a missle then spending 10 minutes talking about how to drill.

The asteroid is broadly spherical. The missile needs to drill into it. So if the target is on the 'back' of the asteroid's surface, your missile won't drill right through it, it will bounce off because you're not facing the target - it's on the other side of a big ball of impenetrable rock. The actual target is visible on the surface when you have it selected, so you need to either manoever your ship to the fissure by flying it to point at the right place, or you need to stay still and wait for the rotation of the asteroid to bring it to you. Or ideally both, since you need to keep your ship's relative position to the fissure as you fire the missile.
