Disposable Forklifts

Imagine a warehouse that threw away its forklifts after loading and unloading the trucks for the day. Insane, right? Yet this is exactly what we do in Elite Dangerous. I know I'm beating a dead limpet, but we really need:

PERMANENT LIMPETS

The limpets remind me of very expensive, automated forklifts, and we should not be throwing them away. I've looked at them up close, these are way more than just disposable beer cans! Our limpet "controllers" should actually be "limpet hangars", with the size slot determining how many limpets we get. A size 3 slot holds 3 limpets, a size 5 slot holds 5, etc. This would make limpets like the SRV or SLF. Give them a similar UI interface so we can retrieve them when done, and perhaps give them different tasks - for example, target a specific material to gather or an asteroid to prospect. For the sake of gameplay, make them indestructible (Nav Beacon metal), however you could make it so they can be accidentally abandoned, thus lost if you're not careful and requiring replacement.

I bring this up as someone who wanted to do deep space (Bubble > 1KLY) mining but decided against it because of the current situation with limpets. Add the fact that the current system is pure nonsense logic (see first sentence), topped with the reality that Frontier realized that infinite probes made for the best gameplay, and you'll see my proposal is just plain common sense (and not a new idea).

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to throw away this laptop because it has served its one-time purpose. Thankfully I have 100 more in my closet in case anyone wishes to engage in dialog. Doesn't leave much room for clothes, however....

Yes, this is something that's bothered me for some time as well. Even if they just degraded into 1 unit of iron, it'd be an improvement.

Given how expensive these are to buy or synthesise I'm inclined to agree, these aren't the cost of a disposable item. There's plenty of opportunities to lose them without a time limit (smacking into rocks, the ship, being shot or going out of range). Most of the time I overbuy and end up dumping some anyway, so they might as well be permanent.

Added to Old Ducks proposal I'd also like to see a universal limpet controller, capable of doing it all. I could finally help people when they run out of fuel.
Just imagine you couldn't swap your modules between ships. Or you would need to buy an entire new ship if you want to use different weapons. That would be just like the current limpet implementation.

Collector limpets should definitely not self destruct after retrieving what you tell them to collect. No limpet should "expire" after a time limit either. The only way that a limpet should be lost is if a hatch breaker limpet is shot down by your target's defenses. In every other situation they should simply automatically return to sender (yes, even prospectors). For the sake of 'realism' or 'immersion' they can have cooldown timers to reflect that the limpets are recharging or refueling, this can result in increase power draw (very slightly) for the controller module as well. I would even accept that they should be more expensive after such a buff.

Your idea makes too much sense, and worse, would make players happy.

Buy 200 limpets, add a rubber band to your trigger and go drink a tea. 'Free' materials. I still prefer Old Ducks idea. Why should they expire at all? Let them dock and refuel once in a while.

Seeing how the DSS can somehow manufacture unlimited probes capable of mapping millions of kilometers of a planet's surface in moments, I don't see why this idea wouldn't work. And it would finally kill the "Master Limpet Controller" discussion.

I'd be happy enough for still functioning limpets to return to the hold instead of showing the 'no more targets are available' message.

Yes, I hope limpet redesign (universal controller that stores them for example) comes with persistent limpets. You can still lose them, they can wear down, etc.

Dunno. I'm pretty fine with the idea of a low cost/printable throw away piece of machinery, especially when maintaining and refueling the thing costs more then printing a new one.
