Newcomer / Intro Distance from Start Point.

Where can you check this?

I'm thinking of the 5000ly journey to get an invite from engineer Bertrum, or whatever is name is, and I'm sure you get a message ping when you've made that distance, but how can you check progress?

The galaxy map route finder gives up at pretty low numbers of ly's.

Just wondering...

Thanks.

when you have his invite there is a sliding scale on the engineers screen telling you how far you have gone/have left

Look in RH panel, press D to cycle to stats screen, scroll down to Exploration, you'll have a 'max distance from start' reading

0 point of our nav coordinates is Sol.
All distances are counted from there

And for the invite, it isn't just distance traveled - You actually have to get your butt 5000LY from Sol. ;)

Distance from Sol != farthest from your start point. Distance from Sol = distance from Sol.....

In case someone else comes in searching for this (like i did)... You got to go in the Codex (right hand panel, first section), and go to "commander", then "stats", and finally; "exploration", and you can at least see your longest distance from start.

If you are doing this to get the 5000LY away from start to unlock that Palin engineer, then i think you can see it in the engineer section of the right hand panel. It should show how far you have done your progress with unlocking Palin (i have not gotten his invite yet, so i cant say for sure)...

Other than this, i dont know of any "in game" methods to check your current distance from start, but there are at least some "distance calculators" for ED that you can find if you google it...

.. or you could just look in the codex, where it tells you that distance...

If you type in the name of the star system you started from or Sol in the galaxy map search window and hit return or click, the map display will move to that point and the information box will tell you how far you are from there. You don't need to plot a route to get the information.

Or simply just go.
When you reach the required distance, both Palin and Chloe will message you.
This is exactly what I did. Packed my stuff, picked random direction and off I went. At some point I got the message from Palin and turned back. When you travel these distances plus-minus few hundred LY wouldn't make much difference. Also exploration data that you collect during this trip comes pretty handy.

Maybe. But all distance requirements are measured from Sol. It's not YOUR starting point, but it is THE starting point.

The requirement for 5kly from start for engineering for Palin is measured from "your" start point, not Sol, the distance in the panel is also "your" starting point and not Sol, so if a player just tries to measure 5k ly from Sol and then turns around there's a chance, depending on which direction they are traveling, that they won't actually reach 5kly from their staring point.

Wow, another great necro.
Yes, you are right, but things chaged a bit in the meantime. While previously it stated "distance from the start", it now more clearly states "distance traveled"

Only three years dead, it's hardly even a zombie yet, more just a bit smelly. I'm sure with a bit of flogging we can get a few more years out of it.

Oh yes I just checked, there are two distance entries in exploration stats.

One is Distance Traveled, for me that's 1,142,117ly and Max Distance from Start which is sitting on 65,648ly, and as far as I am aware that's still measured from Baker's Prospect in Asselus Primus. Hmm memories, next visit to the bubble I must drop in and say hi to old friends.

Just got back into playing ED, been playing off and on for over 5 yrs. I've traveled over 69000 ly total Hyperspace distance but I guess that was just back and forth inside the bubble. Just checked my stats and found out I've only traveled 501ly AWAY FROM MY START POINT. GEEZ, guess I have a long way to go to hit the magic 5000ly for certain engineers. Professor Palin is going to have to wait a little longer for our meeting. Guess I wasn't too concerned about them when i started back then. Oh well, exploration IS what its all about. with the recent update, I was looking at starting my own base and really get back into the game but there are a lot of hurtles put in front of you. I only have about 400 million(looks like Billions is where you need to be), so carrier and base will take a while if I stick with it. Working on getting my mining moded up, finally got my 4 surface lasers working together without losing power on my Cutter, and making 200mil per hour is not happening for me. I guess I have not found the right ring yet. This is why I started looking for those damn engineers. It took me over 2 days just to find the crashed Thargoid ship on Hip 17403 A 4 A, make sure you pick up 25 sensor fragments(not 7 as someone posted and I followed, damn again, i had to go back 17 jumps to get the right amount). You NEED to use your DSS to pinpoint ship crash site, don't get distracted with crashed ship beacon in space.... There are a few different crashed ship coordinates floating around. I found it at -7.33 -6.27. Well, good luck and keep the wind at you back!
