'Distant Stars Expedition 3303' Passenger mission - FAIL

I picked up a passenger mission to Outotch SA-U D4-0, a neutron star 1200ly above the plane. Turns out it has a cool history. It's a real challenge to get there and uses a number of FSD injections, a neutron star and a white dwarf.

Fuel management is critical especially with a lower jump range. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell there's no way back. You go from a neutron to a WD to a neutron and then can't get back to the original neutron for the return trip. So why the mission? (It was a fun discovery though.)

Can you get back to the original neutron star with a double neutron charge? It's a tricky maneuver, but if you go through the jet cone after your FSD is ready to jump (i.e., "Align with target destination"), you'll have an FSD supercharge when you arrive.

Hmm, seems an odd choice for FD to include as a passenger destination - I guess they put a tourist beacon in to commemorate Distant Stars and didn't do anything to stop it being included in the options the mission generator can use...

@ Phoenix Blue: that bug was fixed, so you can't. Like iain666 said, Frontier put a beacon there, but forgot to blacklist it from tourist destinations. To be fair, those who work on mission generation likely didn't assume that the others would put in a "one-way" tourist beacon.

Did anyone make a bug report?

Wow, that's unfortunate, that really shouldn't be in there as a passenger destination! Isn't the tourist beacon at the wreckage site where the whole expedition scuttled their ships because there was no way back?

There has been one bug report, now locked, where a reply stated you could get back, perhaps with the double neutron charge as described above. The tourist beacon is at the neutron where you do the final jump to get into the star cluster from which there is certainly no return. The expedition mapped the stars into EDSM but no firsts were recorded due to suicide. Very tricky and there is a fuel calculator to get you into the cluster. Unfortunately, my Asp didn't have enough of a jump due to giant, weighty passenger cabin.

You could never get back from the cluster legitimately. If it were possible, the entire expedition would not have self destructed at the end.
Dr. Kai did get his name on the FIRST star in the cluster by double charging, but that star is not a NS so he had to turn around there without going any further into the cluster.
In any case, you can't double charge anymore.

Don't bother using the WD boost, since you can safely get the same boost with Jumponium. IIRC, we lost one ship due to that WD exclusion zone.

The only way anyone has returned from the cluster is by opening a support ticket which is why you see tags on many of the systems up there. (cheating IMO)
I haven't been back up there since the expedition so I haven't seen the graveyard and tourist beacon except on Dr. Kai's video.

If the tourist beacon is at the last NS, you might be able to get back from there. Supercharge from that NS and there might be something in range heading back down.
Assuming your ship has the jump range that is. You may need more than a 55ly range to get back.

But he doesn't say how you could get back from there without a double charge.

I'd guess that the original bug report was closed when you could do a double-charge but they didn't fix this mission when they removed double charging.

Hmm. I remember that I did a passenger mission to the last neutron star before the point of no return. It was a hassle to get there and to return, but I did it. It must be in my EDDiscovery logs somewhere...

I did take the mission not taking a look at the galaxy map. I was quite unprepared. I had to find materials for jumponium on the way, but I did it. I hope that helps :D

I managed to get to the tourist beacon in a 52Ly Beluga using two 100% injections along the way. I think I should be able to get back too. A couple of neutron stars back there's a G-star 50 Ly away from the route for refuelling. But at one point it did look like I was stranded!
