Distant stations ie 100,000ls takes soooo long to get to.

HI all

I`m a newbie and flying a fairly standard viper, but i`m finding quite a few missions are to remote stations ie 100,000ls or more and its taking something like 10-15mins (earth time) for me to get to them. I end up reading the news or the elite forums on my other monitor whilst I wait. Am I doing something wrong, or is this just the future of space travel ;-)

THanks

Space is big, if you want to avoid this then check the destination before taking the mission :)

e: And don't ever go to Hutton orbital in Alpha Centauri!

Before accepting the mission, look at the system map and gauge the distance. Take only missions in systems with one star.

Not every system has such distance, but consider it as an exception as like in real world. Who knows maybe all we will be able to do in future is travel for years to get to the closest sun. So you're lucky :)

was the same in EII Frontier...always avoid stations around secondary stars in binary/trinary systems.

A tip, Avoid missions to HUTTON ORBITAL in Alpha Centauri. It is 0.22 Ly (not 0.22Ls) took me about 90 minutes to SC there.

However I did get to enjoy the bulletin board en route.

I have a juicy, Major Reserves Metallic asteroid field in a system near me that happens to be over 150,000 LS from the primary. I'm okay with that...just like a fisherman who is willing to hike a ways to get to that great fishing hole. Yeah, it would get old if I was always having to SC that distance, but for dedicating a a night of mining (and coming away with a full belly of Platinum, Palladium and Gold) I don't feel that's too far. Perhaps the distance keeping others out is the reason it's so juicy and relatively un-tapped.

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Try a trip to Voyager in Sol, it's 2.6 Million ls away

Man, tell me about it... I started out in LHS 3447, a binary system. To reach the station where my Eagle was docked just took forever... Wish they'd split that system in two :p

But no, this is not normal - just unlucky I guess. Jump around a bit and you'll find some good systems with stations you can reach within less than a minute from jumping, find two close together with linking needs/demands and you've got yourself an awesome trade route :)

Thanks for the responses, but how do you check the distances within a system ,for example the system might be 8 light years away from the current systen, but there doesnt seem to be a way of checking how far the stations are. I`m in Pa Para currently and i`m having to do a 100,000ls trip after i`ve jumped to the star system.

..working as intended..

I don't know... it seems that quite a few of the systems with Alliance stations in them have multiple stars... and mission running in them gets old very fast.

Use the galaxy map before accepting a mission

Use the galaxy/system maps before accepting a mission - you can pretty much guarantee that if the station you need to go to is on a secondary star or far out gas giant it's probably going to be a long way away. One of the numbers in there will probably tell you better but I must admit I don't know what does.

How many stars did Achenar have in Frontier? That was one of the worst culprits for me and often made me late for deliveries/missions. Alpha Centauri and Sirius were a as well. :D

Check 'System View', and click on the station you're thinking of going to. One AU is about 500 Light Seconds.

Ahhh, Is it the Semi Major axis in the system map perhaps? Currently my starport is 30,000km. The other port in this system (2 star) is only 1,600km.

I so wish that when excepting missions you could just click on the system name and it would bring up the map. I`m having to type the names onto a notepad on my second monitor and copy and paste them back into the galaxy map. Not very futuristic.

100,000 Ls isn't too bad - do it at top speed, not just 80% cruise. It takes maybe 5 mins, just be patient.

I use the time to explore the Galactic map and plan routes, etc, or mark interesting systems to explorer.
