O7 Cmdrs
Back in January I learnt about the Distant Worlds Expedition watching Obsidian Ant videos on YouTube.
Being a member of the '84 club and having been involved in Elite Dangerous since, it feels like, forever I decided to come back to the forums here and see what this was all about.
I had always felt that Elite Dangerous had a lot of potential as a game, what I was missing was a community of players.
Hoping that DWE would give me an introduction to a few other Cmdrs I signed up: DWE was exactly what I was looking for.
Little did I know what was going to transpire both in game and on a personal level.
There is an energy about the DWE community that I have only experienced in MMORPG PvE: I am still a member of one of the oldest guilds in World of Warcraft.
Now I cannot make any comparisons to other communities in Elite Dangerous although with groups like Mobius and FGE I can well imagine that things are just as much fun.
As part of the preparation for DWE I joined both the DWE Discord instance and the Kamzel TS.
It was on Kamzel TS that I met a bunch of crazy people who I hope count me as a friend as much as I count them as friends, a friendship which will last way beyond DWE: we are now known as the Candy Crew and have gained a certain notoriety for our activities on the way to and at Beagle Point: I love you guys, it has been so much fun and I hope the fun never stops.
It has been a long trip: I have had to make 2 trips back to the bubble, once to repair and once to dig my ship out of a crater at WP 5. There were times when I didn't know if I would make it.
Then things like WP 6 with the ship stacks, the discovery of my first ELW, the awesome meeting at Sag A*, the times we had a break and played CAH, the encouragement and helpfulness of Cmdrs I had never met before at all stages of the journey gave me all the motivation I needed to push on until, finally, on the 1st of April I arrived at Darwin's Legacy.
Has it been worth investing the time to get here: damn right it has been, I am so proud to have been a part of DWE and so should all of those who took part in whatever capacity and regardless of their level of success.
Distant Worlds has not just had a positive effect on my time in Elite Dangerous. I have found new friends (several hundred on my friends list), I have had tangible successes and achieved so much more than travelling nearly 90 Kylies across the Galaxy. I have a real sense of achievement and the last 2+ months have enriched my time enormously.
To all those who made this possible you have my undying thanks.
To all those who took part and entered into the spirit of adventure you can be justifiably proud of yourselves.
