Distant Worlds: A silent moment

Im deeply saddened of the news about terrorist attack in Brussels this morning.

Therefore im challenging every single commander in Distant Worlds expedition for having a one minute long silent moment respecting those who died today because of this mindless and violent act.

Tonight, at 8pm game time I urge everyone ingame to zero your throttle, shut down fleet comms / muting yourself and for one minute, paying respect for those lost their lives today.

pass... if i wanted to do something meaningful like that, why the hell would I do it in a video game?

This was meant of course voluntary and you have every right to pass of course, but as this expedition has become another "world" and a way of life, if you will, for the most of us, i just thought that it would be another uniting factor for this voyage and the cmdrs in it.

Saddened to hear the news this morning. I won't be online at 8pm gametime, but will observe a moment of silence on my own.

I probably won't be able to do it at 8pm gametime. But it would be nice to film our srvs/ships (if still at the WP) go mass silent running.

I don't know. I'd join if I had the time because this game offers a unique perspective on our place in the universe, and the expedition has participants from all over the world. And maybe because I believe that people on Distant Worlds can relate to the following better than a lot of others ...

Carl Sagan said:
Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark.

... because we don't even see the point anymore. In the end, the meaning of a gesture like this, wherever it is done, is something we create for ourselves. If Distant Worlds can give anyone hope, or strength, or just a place to feel safe or less lonely or united with others, its meaningful enough.

Given the multinational and relatively harmonious nature of these forums, I think video games like Elite are an ideal place to express solidarity against mindless hate and violence that is rooted in a narrow, backward, and tribalistic world view.

Agree with the sentiment in real life, disagree with it being in game. (I go there to escape reality).
As you've said I agree that some may wish to do it so what I'm really saying here I don't know. Take a +1, missed the 8pm but will conduct my own vigil (so to speak).

07 Cmdr's, fly safe in-game an in RL.
