[Distant Worlds] Anaconda paint jobs

A year after Elite Dangerous has released, the Anaconda has very few options when it comes to paint jobs; the default, gold and midnight. A very large percentage of the up-and-coming Distant Worlds expedition members will be flying Anacondas, and given how big this endeavor is going to be, it would be really nice if Frontier could support us by releasing some texture packs for this ship, allowing us to have a lot more diversity and make better screenshots and videos along the way - and an expedition of this size can attract attention and new customers. Even just the usual vibrant, tactical and military packs would be great - and as someone who works as a 3d artist in the industry, I can make a pretty educated guess even without seeing how the ship model is set up and say that just solid color changes aren't much of a problem to do, even with the conda's damage model in place. I'm fairly sure that the work hours invested for a texture artist to get this done would pay themselves out pretty quickly just from the Distant Worlds players, let alone the rest of the customization options-starved player base.

Now, I can make a guess on why we haven't seen too many skins for the 'conda so far: when I first bought it, the quality of it's textures wasn't anywhere near to that of the other ships; we're talking uvw-problems, messy greebles, the forward lights were a blurry mess, etc. I heard it was one of the first ships they did and the texture job was old, and I can understand them wanting to fix that first before releasing too many paint jobs for it (an excuse that does wear extremely thin after a year has passed, however). With the latest update the textures for the Anaconda were improved, so it's high time we got some customization options for this end-game ship. A lot of us don't like gold, and for exploration, a black ship against the black of space doesn't necessarily make for great screenshots. If a Sidewinder, a starter ship that most players don't spend much time in before graduating to something better, can have 20 entries in the store, and the Anaconda, an end-game ship, has 1, then we have a contrast here that needs fixing.

In short, giving us more customization options before the year is out would really show support for some of Elite's most dedicated and loyal players - the explorers. So, chime in here if you want more Anaconda skins; let's make ourselves heard :)

It would also do wonders for the FD promotional video's if there was SOME variety.
I wholeheartedly endorse this thread.

I would buy some paintjobs for my Anaconda for sure.
I only intend to buy paint jobs for ships that I use frequently (although I do transgress that rule).
Ive bought several skins for my Python and Vulture and I sure would love to do the same for my Anaconda.
For example an imperial white Anaconda should look superb.

I want a white exploration 'conda myself :)

Totally support and agree with this.
I was just thinking of it this morning. True customisation would be incredible for all ships not just the incredible Anaconda.
Many default, gold, black Condas on this exped would highlight a lack of imagination on FDs part.

My understanding was that it was because the Anaconda was the only ship with a proper damage model, so the skins were much more complex.

Whatever. I will fly in the free Black Friday skin: No more money from me to FD until they deliver on promises already paid for. Which is looking unlikely at the moment.

You Sir are a model of restraint and understatement. I not only second everything you've said here, I third and fourth it. The truth is, the ship I've desired ever since I started playing ED is neglected by FD like a 3rd World child. Ships like the Sidewinder (a ship we can't get out of fast enough) or Cobra are lavished and catered to like a Trophy Wife/Husband.

I would gladly by skins for my Anaconda and in fact avoided buying skins for my Asp, the first ship I explored with, specifically because I knew all along the 'Conda is where I would end up. So please FD, we've seen the different skins on NPCs, release a selection of skins for the Anaconda, fairly priced (no gouging because we're DESPERATE for them). Not only will you turn a handsome profit right out of the gate, but you'll also be making a rather sizable portion of your player base happy ... and happy players are players who are happy to go out of their way to support you. This is Marketing 101 and it couldn't be simpler.

I personally dont' like the looks of the Black Friday skin on my Anaconda.
It looks awesome on my Python though. That silky black makes my Python look like a Black Ops stealth ship.

They are working on the promises already paid for.
It just takes time.

As far as I am concerned the game gets better and better.
I am currently discovering all kinds of little details they have added and tweaked for Horizons and 1.5. So far I love it.

Of course I have a :):):):)load of wishes (who doesn't) and my dozens of proposals are testimony of that, but I am patient.

I'm honestly surprised that the most popular ship in the game has the lowest number of paint jobs, which means it has only one paint job really, plus a free bonus paint job. It's always seemed very odd to me, you would think they would dedicate a few resources to fixing that.

When you have a damage model on a ship and you want to make a color variant of it's textures, you now need to adjust the color of the damage model texture(s) as well. A bit more work? Yes. A lot more complex? No. This was a thin excuse a year ago, it's not one at all now. This is a game about flying space ships, which we can't really customize apart from a few select skins and bobbleheads. We can't even name them! Imagine only having your account name in WoW or Guild Wars 2, and you're "flying" characters aptly named Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist, Ranger and so on. And your character aptly named warrior has 3 skin packs available in the store, each just a solid recolor of it's armor - you can't change the color of each armor part individually. And of course if you want to play Ranger you're out of luck because there's no skins for that class in the store. That's kind of analog to what we have here.

Ideally, the hull of each ship would be split into several groups, which we could change basic colors of. Then the players could buy special colors, decals, stripe patterns etc. to really customize their ride's appearances. But failing that, at least keep the store populated with paint jobs, it's not that hard to do them, damage model or not.

FD must have good reasons, whatever they are, for not releasing many skins for the Anaconda til now.
People have been asking for them for a long time. I bet they will sell good.

It is not a big thing, I feel. Not a priority I mean, but I am ready to buy a few if FD gets around to it.

Shuffling around priorities inside a company does not always occur in a logical pattern - and frankly, offering 20 options for the Sidewinder and 1 for an end game ship at this time sends the wrong message regarding their own predictions on how many people will keep playing the game for longer periods. When it comes to manpower for fixing bugs and introducing new gameplay mechanics, the people who do that are of a different skill set to texture artists. A year has passed, and I do feel it's high time to get more attention to the store. It'll make the players happy, and make FD more money - everybody wins. I'm happy to support FD, and have done so by buying skin packs and even a bobble head I don't intend to use - that last one was simply because I wanted to support the incredible work they put into Horizons. I'm just saying, the store is such an untapped potential right now it's not even funny..

I personally love my Conda in midnight black. It feels like the colour it should always have been.
Driving around her the other day in my SRV I took in her true landed beauty fully.
So many options to customise this gorgeous ship with great paint jobs.
And we are all very happy to pay for it.
So FD if you are reading, give us Conda CMDRs more paint options, it's win/win for you.

Personally id be okey with if they just brought the Military and Tactical Paint jobs over to the Anaconda.. but id love if they'd do something more (like with the Sidewinder, Viper, Cobra and or even the Eagle and the ASP.

(they beter not release more paintjobs the day After we leave on the expedition.)

The fact that after 1 year of Elite there's only ONE paintjob you can buy for the Anaconda in the merchandize shop is, to be polite, PUZZLING from a marketing point of wiev.

Small studio and all, understanding that a paintjob also need shaders and lightning, to me it's totally unbeliveable.

It's all a bit frustrating to be honest.

The Anaconda paint jobs are right there, they came with 1.5 ships it's just Frontier have chosen not to make them available.

Whether there's some technical reason or it's just an xmas marketing thing I dont know.

But they are right there, in the client, Anaconda Tactical, Military and Vibrant packs.
