[Distant Worlds] Discord Server

Hello everyone. As noted in the social media section of the Distant Worlds threads, I've set up a Discord server. Whether or not it'll become widely used is a wait and see. However I think it has sufficient benefits over other solutions to at least warrant a trial. Some brief info:

  • Chat and voice in the same client, with easy setup (and allows for any number of chat and voice channel, as needed).
  • Easy to move the server between regions (or set up localized servers) for better voice latency. I.e possible to move from US to EU to AU depending on time of day.
  • Voice channels can be set to enforce touch to talk, which I find essential even if it's just a couple of people (don't want to hear your coughing, your dog, the TV, the neighbors or anything else, honest).
  • It's free to use.
  • It's secure. Your ip address will not become public knowledge (As opposed to Teamspeak).
  • Web browser, native Mac/Windows programs, Android/iOS apps and from what I can see, pending Linux app.

In either case, if you're part of the expedition, feel free to join.

Please ensure your Discord name matches your Distant Worlds commander name. Once you've joined, please post a message with your roster number to receive full access.

To join just use this link:

I'm not sure it's a great idea to split people between several services that do the same thing, and we do already have a TeamSpeak all set up and working. I'm open to trying it but in the end we should use one or the other, imho.

I removed the sticky on OP's request. He understood, and as he is a DW explorer himself , he put the project first :)

This is, by far, the best tool out. Is our official voice chat in SEPP and is better than any other IMO. Too bad the suggestion came a tad too late for DW but will be using it the same! Go Discord!!

Just learned about this service yesterday, would have probably liked it a little more than skype chat.

Guys, let's not get split over multiple services. Teamspeak is already sponsoring us with a nice large server, it's set up, it's there, some of us have been using it for a while now. I don't think it's a good idea to get split into the Discord / TS / Skype cliques. This is purely a matter of practicality since the service is set up and we already have a bunch of people on TS.

I think we all are going to be in TS regardless...I think we all know the gist of the group will be there and the other half will be in skype...and surely we'll be in the channel for the waypoint meetings and major events...

BUT, some of us already use Discord for day to day operations in game. And I see no harm in us using it while en route or during off events days....after all, Erimus has included this service and many other as official for the Expedition...

If the case is to not give the alternatives, then you could bring it up to Erimus to remove all other media venues from the post as well...or maybe to include the recommendation that everyone MUST be in TS during major event to avoid splitting? idk

Nah, if people want to use Discord for their sub-groups, that's fine. I just think that whenever we're doing checkpoint meetups, we should all use one or the other, not both, it'll be easier to coordinate. And we do already have some 80-ish keys issued on ts so it's really just a matter of already having gone through this setup phase :)

If Erimus and the other DW organizers decide to go with Discord for this, you'll find me there, no problem :)

Just a reminder and a short notice - access to the Discord server is now locked down to registered pilots. If you join using the link, you'll be placed in a holding room. You need to post your roster number to get access, as well as having the Discord name match your commander name.

Cheers!

To all cmdrs, looking to join one of the official chats, you can join us in Discord. Please click on the invite link on the first post of this thread.

Only thing is: please use the exact same name you have in-game, so we can locate you quickly in the rosters, and also friend request and wing. This is needed to get access.

Thank you!! We hope you to join us here soon!

going to try this today, i had issues with ts last time i used it, ED crashed twice when i did try ts (and there were to many americans talking, was inhibited as non english native language speaker ;) )

Well no issues with that here...we barely can understand each other among so many accents, but we still talk! lol..

And you will find Discord very easy to handle: it can run on your smartphone, it can also run on your browser, and of course, it also has an app you can download for the client.

Hope you join us soon CMDR and you find it suitable for your needs. ;-)

May I say that because of this and my friend's huge TS server (2500 capacity) going awol for a few days, I started using Discord with my other circle of friends (another mmo) and we love it. Oh, and being free helps :)
