Distant Worlds II Event Distant Worlds: How Do You Travel?

Most of us are travelling with ships with large jump ranges- but are you actually USING them? Perhaps you shouldn't?

The first leg of Distant Worlds has a number of little sightseeing stops along the way, but by the time I reached the Triffid Nebula I realized I'm still going to reach the Orion Nebula way too fast and lots of people probably reached it on Day 1.

So I'm wondering, is anyone using economical routes between these points to stretch things out and increase their discoveries?

Or are you reducing your jump range filter on the galaxy map to find a sweet spot between economical and fastest?

Or are you getting to a destination fast and then hopping around to other local stars for exploration?

This is a journey of discovery, after all, so what are you doing to maximize your exploring?

When I travel, I have always proceeded in such a way that I have looked at a system into which I jump. Then I decided whether to scan it or not.

A system I wanted to scan was scanned completely, no matter how big it was, or how far I had to fly for it.

This is no longer possible with the new scanning system.
The visual impression can only be gained after the VSS scan.

Now I have to find a new way on the DW2.

So far I proceeded as described above.
I still pay attention to systems whose central star belongs to class M, T, Y or T-Tauri. The other one, the less loved one, also interests me.

So I already scanned several times, among them also in the outer arm starting from a central point star-shaped all systems in range of my ship.
This is what I call a Columbus bubble.

I usually switch to economical if I'm exploring a small area, such as inside a nebula. Otherwise, I push forward with fast routing, including neutron boosts.

In this case, I shot straight ahead to Rohini, to transfer a mining T9 ahead of the CG. To me the more interesting exploration begins after we leave Omega, since I've been all over this area many times before.

Using my Vulture, The Ronin. Stripped down fairly well, but with still a modest maximum jump range of 35.45 Ly.

I'm basically just jump-honking along for long enough until I get too bored of it or distracted and have a look around. Checking out some of the POIs. Need to add the Lagoon Nebula still to the ship's list of visited and cataloged nebulae, for example.

Cheers.

I'm brand new and poor. So, i am taking the trip in my 22ish LY jump range Viper IV. I'm about 75% to omega and have scanned quite a bit along the way. I now have a few systems first discovered by me which is exciting. :D

I pick a bunch of destinations which interest me, off the beaten track of the DW2 map, and zig-zag between them with my full jump range allowing me to cover the distances in a reasonable time. Scanning anything interesting I find along the way like the little trio of planets I'm currently sitting over.

I give you Leisurely route plotting: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/472355-Route-plotting-leisurely-mode

Much faster than economical, much more economical than fast. And you see more systems along the way. Needs a Guardian FSD booster.

Fly leisurely, Commanders!

I like it! I will definitely use it too, BUT, isn't it possible to set a cap on your jump range? Or is that just a cargo capacity thing? Not at my cockpit now but I thought you could set in a range as a filter. If not, then Leisurely mode it is! I hope you make your mark among the explorers for that ;)

You can change your plotting range within the limits of your cargo carrying capacity - assuming you have a cargo rack. However, the Guardian FSD booster trick is more effective at lowering your jump range.

I've been to most of the stations between the bubble and Colonia a few times, so I'm mostly into the mining CG, fun events and sight seeing till we reach Colonia. Once we reach Sag1 (which is the farthest I've been) and CG2 it'll be more about exploration for me. The area we are now is well explored, unless someone strays away (my T10 heavy miner ain't the best for that) :)

Having only explored solo in the past, and often with only a very broad, open-ended target direction in mind, with no timeline, DW2 has so far been an eye-opener for me as to how relatively slowly I appear to travel - I've only made it to Cycladia so far!

I'll need to put aside the FSS and DSS to make any real progress toward Omega Mining, it seems, as in the few hours I might get to play per night, I feel I'm getting left behind a bit. I'd like to get to WP2 in time to contribute in some way to the CG.

The later Monday night launch in AU probably should've given me the message that there's not really any time to muck around - so get moving! (the upcoming upgrade maintenance hitting right in the middle of tonight's peak evening play-time in AU isn't going to help with this, either!)

Time to put this 65ly range to good use and make a dash for it, I suppose.

I’m pretty busy in real life, so I’m currently bee lining to the next waypoint using the maximum jump range of my ship. So far, the sky map is not very exotic so I don’t feel like taking my time anyway. For vanity reasons, I’ve stopped a few times to map a couple of Earth Likes and to scan systems that looked like they had Water worlds, Amonia or ELW.

Ah - so DW2 does have a Colonia region WP?!

The speed I travel will depend how much time I have between meetups but if I have no time constraints then I will be setting my filter to F and G stars and going economical.

I wouldn't know, but judging from our general direction and Target (Sag1), maybe we pass close enough at some point. I would certainly make a fast detour to visit Colonia again, has been a while..

I had this same thought.....

Me, as im not that much of an explorer, and have only been to a few Nebula on my way to Colonia, i am sort of taking my time. Im in a Phantom with 67ly jump range and am using it. I'm also under the impression that most of the systems this side of Sag A* have been discovered/mapped and what i'm seeing every time i scan/map my theory is true. To that end i'm not too bothered about looking for undiscovered and am enjoying the tourist attractions listed and spending a bit of time at them sight seeing and taking photos. In between i use my max range and jump/honk, but every now and then i look to see whats in the system and if there are ELW/Ammonia/Water Worlds then i go see and map.

When i get to a base and sell i wont be expecting any 1st discovered, but maybe some 1st mapped. but we will see.

Once past Sag A* i will slow down and use the leisurely trick above and spend more time scanning/mapping.

It doesn't help reading Sqn chat and Cmdr's talking about being at WP and discovering this and that. Makes me feel i'm missing something and need to get there fast.

See, I keep seeing stuff in chat being reported closer to the main route, which is too much of a detour for me to get to.

I'm getting a late start, but my new Anaconda is almost ready. Should have a jump range of 45 LY, and I'm just going to buckyball to the midway point and wait for people to start trickling in. After that, I'll motor to the next waypoint and repeat the process.

I've been meandering all over the place. I BB'd it into the middle of the Aucock Pocket because BBing is relaxing sometimes. Then I decided to do some science and flew a density scan route up to Z +1000. Then a nebula caught my eye and I cruised over there in leisure mode and did some scanning. Now I'm gradually working my way down to the waypoint.

I wasn't a terribly experienced explorer during DW1, so I tended to jonk large stretches of the route. This time around, my navigator is basically a cat. :D

I use my range and wander....it took 14kly to get to Omega according to EDD. Should probably give Eco a whirl. Dare say there's lots of undiscovered en route in the in between.
45m iirc for the first leg....and my first crystal spikey thing in the inner Orion, and first jelly fish thing that likes to rub your ship. So.... London to Edinburgh via Munich is working for me :)
