Distress call addition, Organic Crystalline Fragments, Crafting and weapon upgrades.

In addition to distress calls, which barely have anything of significance except pirates and cargo, we should be able to find Organic Crystalline Fragments (crystals with consciousness basically.)

These crystals, when captured in a cargo scoop, decay after 15 minutes and need to be contained in a special environment. A station coups supply such environment. Next, you store the crystal for a few hours/days and it Matures. It grows into a larger crystal. In an interface in a new "Containment" section in stations, you should be able to select how many tons to take off the crystal, up to a maximum of 90% the mass. These crystals can then be crafted, along with modules such as a Beam Laser, for example, to upgrade or change how they behave.

Beam laser defaultly:
Fires a strong beam of energy, good against shields and hull

Upgraded with the crystal:
Fires a purple beam of energy at a target, effective against shields and hull. Consumes less power and has a smaller thermal load. Gimballed accuracy is increased, less control loss when facing Chaff

Explanation:

Less power consumption because the crystal is a living organism, capable of turning heat into light energy using thermal intakes on the surface if its "skin". The weapon doesn't rely solely on heat signatures. When chaff is deployed, the crystal uses a magnetic lock to detect where the ship is. Chaff still has an effect but not as significant.
The downside to the weapon is that it overheats quickly when close to a star. It is fine in battle, but when you begin to overheat, it goes down fast. To prevent this, firing the beam will vent heat (as the crystal converts heat into light energy). It does not work in Super cruise. Deploying a heat sink, or reducing the temperature level below 40, forces it to use the Power Plant. However, the energy required from the power plant is so great it is not a good idea.

As for a crystal crafted into a Shield Cell Bank, the cell bank should have an option in the Modules function to activate automatically when the shields are low. Again, it uses heat to convert it into energy. This type of cell bank, however, reinforces the shields when repairing them. It recharges over time, but extremely slowly.

As for a crystalline FSD, the charge rate should simply be reduced by 10% and the mass lock limit from other ships reduced by 15%.

These crystals can be obtained by:

Rare occurrences in Distress Calls
Very rare in Weak Signal Sources
Black market

This commodity is illegal, and punishable by death. If using a module with a crystal installed, you are considered hostile but not wanted.

I hope this doesn't sound too much like an RNG, RPG addition. It just merely enforces crafting in the game and might encourage players to buy horizons (some are feeling ripped off, whilst others don't think the DLC is good enough).

Feedback would be appreciated. I understand the community might be split or in disagreement of this suggestion, but please don't go too hard on me :3

Interesting idea.

With a bit of tweaking I could see this being a thing in ED (once more important stuff has been added).

*) The "entity" should be able to defend itself - and be hard to kill (like SERIOUSLY hard).
*) It needs to be rare - 1 in 10 000 USS?
*) It needs to have a very low benefit to modules, but a benefit nonetheless
*) Benefit cannot be transferred between ships
*) Benefits are not cumulative
*) 20% chance that the module enhanced is destroyed when the ship is destroyed, therefore not available on rebuy.

It could be a nice "Oh My God" moment when dropping into a USS, but I wouldn't put it as a priority (unless it's really easy to code) :D

Would this not break the lore a bit? sentient space crystals that can be turned into super-gear would have a bit of an effect of the faction goals and technology levels.

I am not a fan of lottery style content like this. It rewards high-playtime lifestyles, and diverts development resources away from other systems that are seen by everyone.
