Newcomer / Intro Distress call . . .

Does anybody ever answer any distress call?
You would have to carry refuel limpets and repair limpets.
Why not have a universal limpet controller for both rescue limpets.

I have all sorts of limpet controllers in the ship I use for High Grade Emissions etc hunting and will answer any convenient Distress calls, the majority of which have been repairs.

The problem with universal limpet controllers is that they will inevitably require task specific limpets I find the present system of generic limpets but specific controllers preferable.

While a unified controller would certainly be a cool thing to have, I think the point of them being separate is, just like with many other things, to nudge players from one multipurpose ship to specialized ships.
Just like when you have your ship optimized for trading (long jump range, max cargo capacity,...) you can't expect to win many fights and you won't be able to mine with a combat-focused vessel, or in a multipurpose ship you can't expect to do well in any particular situation, Search&Rescue ships are supposed to be highly specialized.

I agree it's kind of sad when you see a distress beacon lit and you know you have to pass by without being able to help, but such is life.
You can put a small refuelling limpet controller on your trading (or general bubble-going) ships, as many instances of ships in distress are just a refueling job, so if such need arises you can just synthesize a limpet and help them without sacrificing much.
On the other hand, there distress calls are often a trap as well, so it's really up to you if you want to risk it, especially if you're hauling cargo. :)

My search and rescue Keelback wouldn't be much good without refuel/repair limpets. Last did a tour of duty in the Pleiades, no distress call went unanswered and she even survived a few NHSS; no survivors of xenos attacks were found but Thargoid Scouts are hella fun to fight, and it's terrifying when an Interceptor bounces you and the shutdown field hits...

After the fifth time arriving at a distress call signal (the last 2 or 3 ones I checked if they are "fresh" signals) and finding nothing at all I added that on my mental ignore list.

I stopped doing them (despite operating a dedicated SAR Vessel) after I noticed that Refuel SAR Distress Signals had a bug that reduced your Faction Reputation instead of increasing it.

btw. it takes 11 Fuel Rescues in Distress Signals to move you from 100% Allied back down to Friendly Rep :p
(haven't read anything about that in the Patch Notes, so I guess it isn't fixed yet)

But for advanced BGS purposes (i.e. you want to quickly create favorable Faction States or -combinations), Distress Signals were quite effective.

It reduces rep? I was thinking of trying one because of this thread. Perhaps I won't now!

Something in me laments snubbing distress calls, when stumbling across them, but the multiple special equipment requirement rules out being the good samaritan for me, and I am not interested in zipping around in a specialised ship (of any kind, really), and actively hunt the things.

If one could refuel/share-spare-parts by tether, as a slower alternative to limpets, I would definitely be more likely to help my fellow pilots, even if they are nothing but a briefly existing, procedurally/randomly generated data structure. :7
