You'd think that in this futuristic universe, it would be easier to find people whose ships are out of fuel or damaged. It's hardly worth carrying Fuel Transfer Limpets right now because you rarely run across NPCs who are out of fuel and if you DO find them but forgot to pack a few limpets, you're going to feel terrible about leaving them there to die.
How about distress beacons with a longer range? Sure, it would make finding people in distress easier but there are downsides to it as well.
1) If you're aligned with a particular faction, you might think twice about activating a distress beacon in enemy space.
2) Pirates could use distress beacons to set up traps.
