Distress signal question

I fly over to a distress signal threat level 0. When I got there, I couldn’t find anything. A message came through asking for fuel. Now, I take it I’ll need furl limpets, but what am I sending fuel to, if there’s no ship?

Its more then likely because your ship didnt have good enough sensors and you couldnt spot the ship. Sensor are part of Core Internals in outfitting.

Thea hit the nail on the head here it's your sensors. I have g5 long range and even then they barely show up on my radar and are usually more than 10km out from where you drop in. Most of the time it's a fuel request though it can be a repair request too sometimes. If you want to be a rescue ranger and drop into these get long range sensors and bring both fuel and repair limpets.

Yup. This one.

Coz the ships are essentially "Disabled" their signature is very small making them more difficult to resolve on sensors.

For any USS like this, I find it better to just fly straight without changing direction for a bit, and evetually a blip will appear. Move towards it to resolve it.

Oh, man. I've bailed on many of these "empty" instances, even on the rare occasions when I was carrying the right gear, because I assumed it was a bug. That's what the patchy history of this game's QA has reduced me to. Even when it's doing the right thing and presenting the most "believable" scenario within its limited programming, my first assumption is that it's not working properly. :(

Hint : use Night Vision to spot the cold Distress Vessel, it typically sits around 4-6km Distance and is otherwise very tough to spot

I typically got a solid Target and lock not before I reached <1km distance.

Good info here.
I dropped in on a distress call a couple of weeks ago (which I don't normally do). The guy/girl needed fuel but I don't carry fuel limpets. It was kind of depressing flying off w/o helping him/her.

GL HF

They made it now so that you can fly back to the distress signal. each unidentified signal source has a timer.

Thanks for all the info. I’m fairly new at ED, and I’ve been spending the majority of my time exploring. ill swing back and get the limo it’s I need and that sensor.

Would not rule out a bug. Last night I dropped into a number of Combat Aftermath signals only to find empty instances.
I've had this to, but after flying around in the debris, stumbled on salvage such as escape pods, beacons etc from time to time. These things have practically no signal, so finding them so far for me anyway, has been luck (Not tried the night vision thing).

Most of the time though I just think meh, and jump out.

There doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement that you've delivered fuel. The stranded ship fires up and leaves after you've delivered the fuel but the same distress message keeps repeating. The ship never says anything to you to acknowledge you were ever there. A bit broken.

Also, even though the instance remains, there could be a different ship when you return to it. I found a disabled sidey at first, I went and got my Chief and returned to find a hauler instead.

I went back to where the signal was, after I loaded up with what I needed, but all that I found was a destroyed ship with some cargo.

They do seem pretty random (Distress Call Threat 0). In War USS they tend to want repairing, otherwise they want fueling. Some of the repairs too several limpets - they seem to need to get to > 20% repaired (need more data). Had one which seemed empty, haven't see the one with wreckage yet.

They could be quite fun if you fancy a bit of Search+Rescue RP, but there are several issues:

* USS spawn rate - they seem to seen specific system states and you still don't get many
* USS spawn location - whoever thought USSs spawning 10k+ ls away is fun was a masochist
* Payout - 2500 CR for 10 minutes travel? Oh, maybe they put rare encoded mats on the wake of the rescued ship? Nope, G1
* Build - you want repair and refuel limpets, neither of which is a common choice in many builds

I reckon if fdev fixed any three of these I could ignore the other, but as they stand I doubt I'll be off on search+rescue missions for a while

Edit: And then I went to Epsilon Eridani as apparently it is a HGE hotspot - zero NHS, a ton of distress calls. Ah ED
