This suggestion is based on a ship (actually two) of the old Traveller RPG, specifically the system defense boat and its jump tender (and not the NCC-1701-D).
The first half of the ship functions as a fighter incapable of jumping out of the system. It has all the weapons, strong thrusters and so on (and a low power FSD for in-system travel). On this half the FSD is fixed.
The second half is mainly a FSD with the minimum of other systems (no weapons, no shields). On this half only the FSD can be exchanged or modified. Or possibly one internal module for a FSD booster.
You can separate the two ships, the drive section either stays there (easy target) or automatically travels to the next station in the system. The combat section is now more maneuverable than the whole ship). To recombine you have to fly to the other half and dock.
I am not sure of the sizes of both halves, it could be a large ship that divides into two medium ships or the full ship is medium at the upper range and the two halves are also medium but at the lower range.
P.S. This is also based on my style of play, I dock at the nearest station and exchange my "travel" modules (A-class FSD-drive and -booster and fuel scoop) with combat specific modules (D-class FSD-drive, shield booster...).
