DK2 - CV1 upgrade ?

Hi Guys,

I have had a DK2 for about a month now and really enjoying the stuff I can do with it. I have I suppose an average rig now as my PC is about 3 years old. AMD 8core processor, 16gb ram, SSD and 970GTX.

I get 75fps for most of the time I am playing then a pretty much constant 37-40fps when around stations or on station services etc.

My question is - With the current sale, would I notice a big difference in game quality by upgrading to a CV1 and secondly would my rig cope with the CV1 ?

I am very tempted to hit buy, but if I need to blow another £400 on a 1080 graphics card or have a substantial upgrade I could not justify the cost at the moment. Also I have had a go in a CV2 a few months back but cant remember how much better the vision was compared to a DK2 as there was no DK2 to compare against.

Any assistance in the above would be most appreciated :)

Can't comment on the AMD stuff, I don't use them. What I will say is that the power required to run a CV1 is greater than a DK2. The CV1 needs to run at 90FPS as opposed to the DK2 which ran at 75FPS. The CV1 is also higher res, so you may struggle to hold 90FPS if you struggled to hit 75FPS on the DK2. There is ASW, which will drop your FPS to 45 and make up the missing frames to 90 in order to make the game appear smoother, it works well but is not a crutch you will want to rely on 100% of the time.

As far as DK2 Vs CV1 goes:

CV1 has higher res and adjustable IPD.
CV1 suffers from god rays - these are annoying but you learn to block them out.
CV1 has a much reduced screen door effect when compared to the DK2.
CV1 has much better tracking and higher tracking volume.
CV1 is much nicer to wear and not so heavy.
CV1 has a slightly lower FOV than the DK2.

Will you notice a big difference over your DK2? Well I for one was a little disappointed with my CV1 to begin with but once I got over the god rays I became very happy with it and for £399 the CV1 is a steal right now! Touch is also fantastic and room scale / motion controlled VR will blow your mind.

It's been a long time since I used my DK2 but I'd tend to agree with what CylonSurfer says.

It could be possible that the reason why I found the CV1 better than the DK2 was the adjustable IPD. I didn't realise it before but my IPD of 69cm means I am the human equivalent of a hammerhead shark.

My computer is only slightly more powerful than yours, a GTX980 over a 970, but I found the increase in resolution a boon. Here's a little question for you.. Last week I was running around looking at the crash sites. I had to use the planet coords to locate those sites, and I was managing to do that with ease in my CV1. I didn't even have to lean forwards to peer at the numbers. Can you see those figures clearly in the DK2?

A CV1 setup is much more graphics hungry then your DK2 setup now. If you want to keep the quality settings you are playing now with, you need to upgrade your GPU.
The sensor of the CV1 is way better then the DK2 sensor. I've had issues when looking over my shoulder to admire the cockpit in my DK2, never in the CV1.
The convenience factor of the CV1 is way way higher than with the DK2. It is as convenient as putting on as headphones.
Screendoor effect is way less prominent on the CV1. Legibility of text is way better in ED with a CV1.
The CV1 is brighter due to some color profile it uses in ED compared to the DK2. I preferred the DK2 in that regard. Someone posted a guide how to get it closer to DK2 levels. For me it is perfect now.

For the money the CV1 is now available it is a good upgrade over the DK2.

Well at the moment it is bad to buy a new graphics card because of the Etherium miners.
I bought my Gigabyte 1080 Extreme Gaming Premium pack end of may for 600 €, that was a nice deal because of the pricedrop and the VR extra equip that comes with the Premium pack. I got the Rev.2 one. The Aorus was about the same price but without the extra VR things.
However now the same pack cost now 660-700€ and the Aorus 720-740€.

As for the Rift, well its a very good time to buy one now, because of the pricedrop. You get the whole package VR set, X-box Controller and motions controllers for 450€ now (if they not sold out already).

Why are the etherium miners to blame for the price increase ? Easy, they buy AMD grafic cards for mining and prices go up for that ones. You can sell your used card for more then you bought it 1-2 years ago. So a lot gamers sell the used card and buy a Nvidia with better specs for the money and this leads to an increase on Nvidia cards aswell.

For me, i wanted to buy a VR set in the past just for ED but the price was way to high. Now i would just wait for a Gen2 VR set or the price goes down even more. They could have sold a lot more sets if they started with 450€ for the set back then.
Now that facebook owns it and want my data, having DRM and still not much interesting games beside Elite i have not much interest to buy one anymore.
The VR sets didnt sell any good, so no wonder there isnt much good software for them out. The hype seems over or ppl wait for then Gen 2 of the sets.

From what i read only 100.000 rifts where sold, no wonder Faceboock wants to sell whats left of the stock.

I still use a DK2 and have not upgraded to the CV1. My neighbor has a CV1 and I tried it. Technically, it is the better headset. Better image, less SDE, lighter weight, built-in headphones, better tracking, touch controllers for other games, etc. But I still have not upgraded.

Why do I still keep my DK2 despite all the pros of a CV1?

I didn't think the cost of the CV1 at the time (1 year ago) was worth it. Maybe with the current sale, it might be worth it. But I would still have to upgrade my graphics card from a 980 to a 1080ti if I wanted to keep the same graphics level. Currently, I am able to run the DK2 with full ultra settings (bloom set to none) but everything else set to ultra/max. SS is set to 1.0 but HMD is set to 1.5. Everything looks great and I get use to the SDE. If I upgrade to a CV1, I need a 1080ti to run the same graphic settings. As long as the DK2 is still supported, I am willing to wait for the next gen (CV2).

But that brings my next question. Is Oculus or HTC currently working on a next gen VR? I know Pimax is working one. Maybe others are also working on a new next gen. But are the big two (that has the most software support) working on a next gen? Or has the CV1 and Vive been a one-time thing and will remain the only viable production VR for the next few years?

I'm another DK2 keeper. Even at the current price, CV1 isn't a compelling upgrade, and the DK2 offers an arguably better picture.

I just upgraded from DK2 to CV1, with the new $399 pricing.
...and first impression is that I'm a bit disappointed. (Although giving it a chance to warm up to me.)

- I was worried about the god rays, and it's WORSE then I thought. Hopefully I get used to this...I really do.

- The VR world is "tilted" for me - almost a deal-breaker, but not giving up yet. This seems to be a recurring problem for some, where the display's gyro isn't calibrated properly, and thus the VR world isn't level. Oculus used to have a calibration tool, but it's apparently ineffective with the current Oculus Runtime. Brilliant.

- The higher resolution is great! The virtual removal of screen-door is great! But then it's all ruined by the god rays. (I find text hard to read.)

- CV1 is definitely smaller and lighter... But I think maybe it's also warmer, making my face feel hotter?

I really want to love the CV1... But my DK2 is putting up a good fight in my mind!! :)

I also torn on if I should by one.

I wonder how how much God Ray's will affect me as I have bloom set to none just as Tri Velo and a couple of other settings to make it easier on my eyes. Having an intolerance to certain frequencies of light makes it hard to play ED for more than 10 mins on everything standard.

Detail wise it's max settings for me and it doesn't miss a beat.

anyone care to comment on the settings I have from a first hand on the CV1.

@rkodey

God rays is definitely a "thing" on CV1. i took the following 2 approaches to resolving it:
a) See god rays as a cool movie like effect
b) God rays are produced by high contrast scenarios (glowing white text on a black background for example). I turned down the gamma a little and i also turned down the in-game panel brightness. I would say now i go 15-20 mins at a time before a god ray is bright enough to catch my attention. Its a bit like living near a motorway. You totally get used to it after a while and your brain tunes out the constant drone. You start to tune out the god rays too. At least i did.

Tilted VR. Fear not. My first CV1 (there is a clue there) was tilted on setup. i spent ages getting the sensor exactly level thinking that had something to do with it. Its the gyro in the headset as you say. If its bothering you - just send it back. This is why i bought from amazon. I sent it back Monday evening and a new one arrived on Tue afternoon and this one is level. i could not live with the tilted reality. it was utterly immersion breaking. You wont be able to fix it because as you say, the software adjuster which Oculus send out to those affected does not work with the latest version.

I agree its a little warmer than the DK2. That said, i only notice the head the first few mins i put it on. After that it seems to reach an equilibrium, or even cool down once the heat makes its way out via conduction/radiation.

Im personally struggling with the straps. i find that if they are too lose the rift drops down my face and i lose focus in the horizontal plane. if its tight enough to maintain crisp focus (of the green test cross) then after an hour my forehead feels quite a lot of pressure. Im only on my 2nd real day with it thought so we are growing together. Snowboarding boots feel awful the first few times you use them until you get used to them and then you dont even notice them!
