I have a 3 week old computer that I built primarily for playing ED on the rift. It's Win8.1, dual gtx 980s using SLI, with a i7-4790k CPU. I'm running ED using the technique I've seen posted here with the rift as the primary monitor - I turn on the rift, this turns off the desktop monitor, I run the launcher, and the rift is the primary display.
At random times while playing ED - sometimes not for hours, sometimes every few minutes, the rift will go black. At this point, I can power off the rift and Alt-Tab to the desktop. Once in a while I get an error "A file has failed to load after multiple attempts as Direct3D cannot lock a buffer." Almost every time, though, the windows desktop is really messed up. For example, if I start task manager to try to kill the ED processes (launcher & game), clicking inside task manager will hang task manager, and I'm forced to reboot the computer.
While the rift is running, it works well. I've tried various settings in the game to get good quality and frame rate. Also, ED seems to work fine with the desktop monitor - so I'm pretty sure this is specific to the rift or DirectX.
I'm using the GeForce driver 347.52. I see many folks are using older drivers like 347.25. The Oculus firmware is 2.12 and the driver is Oculus SDK 0.4.4 Runtime Rev 1.
I saw a suggestion for Win7 to fil the Direct3D buffer error above to edit the registry to increase a timeout value from 2s to 10s. I can't find the analagous registry key in Win8.
So, what I'm thinking is (1) install geforce driver 347.25 & test, (2) buy a USB hub and test, and (3) try to find the Win8 timeout registry key. Any suggestions before I start down this road?
Edit: 3 Weeks Later. I noticed in system logs that Asus AI Suite 3 spat out a lot of errors while I was playing E
with the rift. Uninstalled AI Suite and haven't had a problem in a week or so. Post hoc ergo propter hoc? Dunno.
