DK2 & Elite - The Beginners Thread

*More detail :
My GPU = GTX 970 and ED graphics preset = Low.
In extended mode I get a solid 75 fps in the station/hangar and space.
In direct mode a solid 37.5 fps in the station/hangar and up to 75 fps in space (37.5 fps means no low persistence, which causes an ugly echo image effect).

I just tried pulling the plug on one monitor and dropping the quality in Elite to medium for most things. Then tried the Wolfpack tutorial so I had something that anyone could compare to. It's got dog fighting and asteroids so it seems a fair benchmark.

37.5 FPS
Relevant PC Specs
  • INTEL CORE i5 4670K 3.40GHz 6MB Cache LGA1150 CPU,
  • Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC 3GB 1000MHz, 3GB DDR5, MINI
  • G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL 16GB Kit (2x8GB)

Playing in Direct Mode. Next step is to test out Extended mode. Though to be honest, the experience wasn't too bad.

Thanks for the feedback, kinda confirms I don't have anything obvious set-up wrong. At 37.5 fps I get a distinct echo image when looking around, so for example when focusing on the hologram of a station / ship in the HUD I see two duplicate images when I move my head (bit like being drunk). Others mentioned that's a direct result of the low persistence not working at that low fps.

Hopefully in Extended mode your fps will be considerably higher. Whilst it 'should' be the other way around - it will confirm Direct mode needs a bit more work.

Whilst I used to think Direct mode would be a 'nice' bonus - with the full release of ED imminent the hassle of setting up Extended mode might put off some which would be a shame :(

I cannot play ED in extended mode. The demos for the Rift work fine, very well in fact. However ED is at such a low resolution (at least i think thats what it is) I cant even tell what the menus say. It's weird, no idea whats going on.

This is what the initial 'warning' screen looks like, and the menus are even more unreadable.

and here it is in Direct Mode, crystal clear

Looks like your resolution is set wrong. When enabling and disabling secondary monitors, this can get set to a lower value automatically and you have to go back in to the graphics settings and up it. This happens to me if I start ED before I remember to switch the rift on.

I agree, it does look like that, I just couldn't navigate the menus to fix it. I'll have to write down the steps and menu positions for everything first and then do it blind. I didn't realise Eliet would mess with that setting once I had set it. hmm, perhaps it's in a file somewhere. Something to look for when I get home tonight.

OK.

So I have been able to force the refresh rate to 75hz. I had to download a utility call CRU from here: http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU I was then able to add extra refresh rates/resolutions so I added 75hz to 'overclock' my monitors.

After a restart I was able to go to my screen reslution, advanced settings and choose 75hz versions of my normal resolutions. In game, the resolutions that I had added 75hz to now have an option to change the refresh! next step is to choose the optimal resolution

A thing I found out on my ATI powered HP monitor (which does support 75Hz at lower resolutions) is that if you disable Image GPU Upscaling in the digital flat panel properties, you get your 75Hz back (when enabled all seems locked to 60Hz). So, if on ATI, check out the settings of GPU up-scaling.

I ordered some lens protectors 3 sets for £5 kind of price. Put them straight on the rift on arrival and I can scrub away happily with the wiping cloth

Really seems pointless to me. My lenses are scratched beyond belief. But the simple fact is they are not visible when so close to your eyes and have no effect on the quality of the image.

As someone who also got the Rift last week and had a quick go on E.D. the first thing I did after playing it briefly was order the X55 HOTAS :)

Im late to the party as always. My X55 arrives in a week or two. Cant wait to try it out !

To other posters in this thread. Im new here and to the Rift. Lots of good info for me to make use of.

Had my first flight around a planet with rings around it.. Wearing the Rift along with headphones, awesome ! Just amazing. I cant get over how good ED and the Rift is :)

.

that's pretty old, but mostly applicable. Do not pause the oculus service though - that was for before Elite added the the 0.4.x oculus runtime.
