Dk2-Has anyone tried this?

Hi guys

I am no tech or coder or anything but yesterday i had a brain f*%t (lol) and maybe you can help me

I was thinking if there was a way to have the nvidia card just working for the oculus and ed and maybe improve overall performance (force steam to run the game in vr via the NV card )

So I enabled the onboard graphics to run them as primary (HD4600) updated all the drivers etc

Now both the intel and NV show up at the device manager and both are working properly

Connected my telly to the onboard and all was good

Connected a second telly to the NV all good signal was there as extended desktop

Took the telly off the NV , connected the rift to its previous connection on the card, but no HDMI signal. I was getting the error in oculus home "HDMI not found" or something and the blue light on both the sensor and the headset wouldnt come on

When I teied to open the nvidia control panel it said it wasnt available (it was available with the 2nd tv) as no display is connected , although the rift is a "type" display connected via HDMI?

Question is , why does the rift doesnt show as active when its the only item connected to the nvidia when the card is correctly installed and powered (2nd tv worked fine)?

Is there something built in the rift that stops it from activating when there is no other connections (ie screen)to the NVidia?

Has anyone tried the above set up?

Ps: whilist trying the above setup i updated the nvidia deivers and for a brief few seconds both the sensor and headest came on and oculus show them there. I had a signal on the display as well. When i closed down oculus for a restart and opened it again got the same error

Any advise and help will be greatly appreciated and many thanks in advance

There is basically no performance gain. The image you see on the desktop is simply a clone of the view being displayed in one of the eyes of the oculus. It's not producing the two left and right views for the oculus as well as a 3rd view from the center for the monitor. They already thought of this. I remember seeing this question answered on the oculus forums somewhere.

If you want to see an improvement in performance, You should be launching ED from Oculus home. It is my understanding that the ATW doesnt work efficiently when launched through SteamVR.

When I had my DK2 I used to run it as the primary monitor, but that was back in the days when the Oculus software worked in extended mode. It was more to ensure my monitor didn't limit the refresh rate to 60Hz. I'm not particularly adept at computing so when I got something that worked I stopped fiddling in case it stopped working <grin>

If you are trying to save one or two clock cycles by switching off the mirror, then can you not just do that from the Steam Options?

So is there no way for the NV card to see the rift with the new runtime?

I was hoping to have the on oard running all the windows items and make steam to directly use the sexondary NV just for the oculus

The problem is the card will not see the rift when its the only one connected to it and cant do any checks to see how it will perform
