DK2 Painful start each time...

Hi Guys,

Do you have the same starting weird symptoms ?

I’m using SDK 0.5.x. Windows 7 64bits, GTX970 and its more recent drivers, and my DK2 is extended as primary display (on the left) like always.

With ED 1.2 and below, it took few seconds after I click the play button to see the logo raising in my DK2. I was done, ready to play.

Suddenly, starting during 1.2 (so without any client update) it took more than one minutes before the DK2 screen goes black, at the same time the second ED icon appear in my taskbar (launcher + game), and then after 10 seconds the DK2 show my extended desktop again like if the game crashed (it didn't IMO). From this point I just have to ALT-TAB several times until the raising ED logo finally appear in the DK2 screen (my background desktop picture=>black screen=>repeat few times=>ED Logo raising). Then I can play (with the double mouse icons bug, but that’s another story). So all that took several minutes :(

This is painful, no?

I’m the only one?

Yes?

(crying)

I have a similar system, just with a 980. It does take a while to start the game after launching. For ED I don't set it as the primary display, I just keep it extended. I don't put the headset on straight away though. Here's my process for launching ED:

1) Run Oculus Utility and start the test desk scene. I don't have my headset on at the this point, I'm just looking through to click start and then I quit it. I do this as it seems to ensure that low persistence is active, weirdly, launching the test utility before a lot of Rift demos or games seems to smooth out errors.

2) I put my headphones in, hold my DK2 to almost head-hight - not exactly or anything, just roughly to my chin.

3) Launch ED and wait for the intro sounds to play, press escape to get rid of the horrible 2D video (seriously, watching this through the rift is nausea inducing).

4) Wait some more until the texture thing is all prepared as that is stutter city.

5) Wait until I see the Oculus Safety confirmation thing through the rift and then put the headset on. Press fire about five times to get that window to go away.

6) Start game and then once I'm in, keep my head relatively steady for about 10 seconds as I always get a frame drop for the first few seconds after launching. I don't know why.

7) Play for hours.

Thanks for your feedback. I just made lot of tests (before reading you) including swapping display (monitor<=>DK2), swapping USB ports, removing tons of useless services, checking all game files using the ED Launcher, removing the cache check from ED Launcher options, launching the test scene before the game like you do (direct and extended). No more success.

My problem is entirely inside your point #3. Launch ED, wait for around 1m30'', then the Oculus camera turn on (blue), the DK2 display a black screen, wait 15 seconds, DK2 switch and display my extended background picture. Now I alt-tab several time before having the raising (or already raised) Logo, done.

Checking services and processes show than the problem is inside the ED Launcher, and CPU stay nearly idle during all that weird timing, waiting for something (timeout?). The real game client EliteDangerous32.exe appear when the dk2 turn black after 1m30", and ALT-TAB give the focus to it. The next test I need to do but I'm reluctant is to disconnect my DK2 and launch the ED flat favored version on my monitor. Believe it or not after I had my dk2 I never launched ED on the monitor, never! ;) That will make me know if it's Oculus related or not...

Edit: Ok,I did the flat monitor test, and the problem is exactly the same using my monitor!
I disconnected my DK2 (USB and HDMI) and changed option in game to use my monitor. Then I rebooted, and launching the game show exactly the same behavior: Clicking on Play and after a long time my background desktop picture turn all black, keeping my game folder, the ed launcher and my taskbar displayed with a second ED logo on it (ed launcher + game). Then, after around 10 seconds, my background picture reappear, and at that point I have to alt-tab one or two time before the raising logo appear. And the same bug appear also in game about the double mouse icon on screen at the same time (system mouse icon and ED one).

So this problem is not Oculus related! I'm surprised. Now I gonna check other thread than VR ones to see if I'm the only one having this problem. I guess log files (I cleaned all log file before making those tests to be sure it's not due to growing logs) can help here to see what's going on, but not sure posting them is accurate...Possibly if I create a bug report (that will be the first one)?

I've been reporting that bug for months after christmas last year, and then I gave up.

I did not play Elite in the past 4 months because of that bug. Now I just wanted to have a look at this powerplay stuff... but that bug is still unresolved... see you again in 4 or 5 months... unless I finally ask for a full refund !

I created a ticket long time ago (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=158007) and I sent my dxdiag report like requested. So far no news and problem still happen each time I launch the game, with or without DK2.

Possibly some files are corrupted, so I will try a complete uninstall/deep clean/reinstall process. As save games are made online I don't think I'll lose anything (but settings to redo, not a big deal). If this problem still happen after this I'll be more pushy ;)
