DK2 Support

I'm thinking about getting a used DK2. It's a price thing and I don't think my rig would comfortably run a CV1 anyway (GTX 970 Asus Strix, 4th gen i5 4460 3.4 GHz, Kingston Hyper Fury X 8GB DDR3)

Is it worth getting if Oculus prevent support of the DK2, or are there workarounds? As you can tell, I on't know what I'm talking about, but I can learn to tweak (built a HMD a couple of years back with a Nexus 7 and Trinus VR), so as long as it's possible to run, I'm happy to give it a go.

I think the OR is recognised by the PC as another monitor. But without Oculus support, would the screen fire up as it's hooked up via HDMI, or would it simply not switch on. Because (started a sentence with 'because', that should start a storm) if the screen works and motion can be detected with other tracking devices (which I have), then it should be good to go.

I've looked at a few AIO' HMD's, but I'm still keen on the DK2. I don't get motion sick, so lower frame rae isn't an issue.

TLDR; Ca\n the DK2 still operate without official support/drivers

Oh, an Happy New Year from your obnoxious, troubled, narcissistic, arrogant, politically challenged and challenging, sexy in the right light (dimmed), rude, occasionally polite, often funny (imo) Commander Avago Earo.

I played beta and bought the DK2 as a result. I wasn't disappointed but things have moved on and the CV1 is a a lot easier to set up.

I've just moved on from my DK2 to a CV1 (on a 1080ti). I ran the DK2 on a 980 (non-Ti) and supersampled at 1.25 or 1.5 IIRC which greatly improved the clarity for more distant objects (text). Frame rates would occasionally drop but for me the trade-off was worth it.

I guess I've missed an announcement about "preventing support" for the DK2 though. Is it happening or are you just hypothesising?

My DK2 works fine still. The only downside is that the Oculus platform doesn't support it but you can still use SteamVR and most games.

Don't pay too much for it though, you can't get spares for it, and most of them are falling apart (the glue holding the foam facemask on is woeful, and the foam itself gets pretty gross over time) so you'll have to improvise repairs.

For me, the biggest problem with the DK2 is the screen-door-effect. Even though its per-eye resolution of 1080x960 isnt much worse than the Vive and CV1 at 1200x1080, you really can see every single pixel. The fresnel lenses in the Vive and CV1 make the resolution seem so much higher than it really is!
