Dk2 users, how do you "use Flight Controls" w DK2 covering your face?Joystick a must?

I just have a good ol keyboard and mouse. Debating buying a flight stick etc. MAN is this game amazing on my dk2 which I just fired up yesterday!!!!! Beautiful and immersive.

Still, now that it looks great I am noticing that I can't fly very well because with my face covered I have a hard time pressing buttons on my keyboard other than the wasd and mouse flight controls. I can fly, but can't quite do other things such as targeting etc the training asked me to press T or U and I basically couldn't.

1 - SOoooo, long story short, please recommend to me what you are all doing so that you can fly while you play with your face covered!??!

2 - how do I "activate" voice command inside Elite Dangerous so that i can talk to my ship and tell it what to do? Thanks!

Thanks!

I tend to peek through the little gap by my nose and just about manage, helps that I've got a keyboard that lights up though..

Not used Voice Commands so I can't help you there.

Same as above, X52 (Joystick, Throttle, Pedals) Bind mostly Everything to the multiple POV's and buttons, makes things a lot easier and brings the key board to your hands. also, I placed the three controllers in relation to the game character, when I look down at them I can just place my actual hand in relation to the game and bam! so finding them is easy as heck. For voice control of things, You can try programs like Voice attack which I hear is a popular one. End game is... you just end up living in your oculus and pretty damn close to full game immersion besides the obvious.

X-52 pro and voice commands via Voice Attack.

For typing I use the same technique as TJ, but it's cumbersome (not a touch typist).

While I'd hesitate to declare that a HOTAS combo is de rigeur for OR use - it certainly addresses many of the issues in a satisfactory manner.

I think that a key component to the whole thing is Voice controlled commands.
I personally use voice for almost everything, including throttle.
Voice Attack is a steal at $8 US.

I'm just guessing, but I would assume that the vast majority of people playing with a Rift will also have a HOTAS. A good enough HOTAS (Thrustmaster T-Flight X) is really cheap and you'll get by with it just fine. However, being Rift owners, most of us apparently have disposable incoming. I went for a Thrustmaster Warthog with Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals.

I use an x52 setup, no pedals (twist for yaw) and voice attack. I made a profile with the phonetic alphabet and numbers to enter text if needed. Works well although admittedly if I could blind type it would be faster.

I'm using a warthog (although it just broke again) with 360 contoller for maps.
tried voice attack but it doesn't work well for me becuase I like the audio cranked right up.
you soon get to know where all the buttons and switches are by feel.

I only have CH hotas setup and I got enought buttons for everything I need. Anyway I rarely watch keyboard while playing games and with mouse its similar, so I think you should do fine. I can also type with all 10 fingers, so I do not need to search for letters on my KB :p

It's vastly different when your left hand has to find buttons that the right hand usually only accesses.

I'm using the Saitek X55 HOTAS, which has a great layout for me (even twist for Yaw, although its not the smoothest twist motion), and have no issues finding the buttons on either the Throttle or Stick without looking, although I do not use the toggle switches that run down the right side, as it takes too long to find which one is which without messing around.

You get used to controllers or joysticks with the Rift, just like getting used to a TV controller and no longer needing to look at the button locations.

I have no comments on VA as I do not use it.

It's all about which keys you bind. Being a lefty, I use the numpad keys for most everything: piloting, galaxy map, UI controls.. This way, I can easily find keys by touch, & never need to move my hand.

I use mouse+keyboard with default bindings and have no problems. Haven't missed a key yet. Even in the middle of intense combat with switching fire groups and modules quickly I don't have any problems. Muscle memory I guess. I learned how to blind type so I guess that helps as well. Just stick with it, you will get the "feel" for where the keys are in no time.

X55 Rhino hardmounted on my home-made rig so that the stick and throttle's position match the placement in Rift-space. Just awesome. There's more than enough buttons and switches on the HOTAS to assign all necessary functions, thought about getting Voice Attack but I really don't see a need for it with this stick. I've tweaked the standard button layout quite a bit. It takes some practice though to remember which switch does what, particularly the rarely used ones like cargo scoop and silent running, and I'm not there yet. I sometimes just activating those from the right cockpit panel.

I'm using an X52Pro setup at the moment and I have everything I need mapped onto various buttons. It's a bit close if you want to put everything on there, but my making use of the mode selector and and changing the throttle thumbstick/mouse thing to act a bit like a 4 way hat.

But I previously used an old Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 which only has a few buttons. With that I used the side menus a lot, you can do everything from the in-ship UI pretty easily in the Rift once you get used to it.

My warthog broke two days ago (only the stick) and now I use throttle, pedals, keyboard and mouse (have an Xbox controller but hate it). I must say that after about 30 minutes of relearning my controls, it works surprisingly well. Replacement is on the way for immersion purposes.

I personally don't like using VA, but that's just me.
