On a different note, if limpets just go thur shields like they are not even there why the heck doesn't someone in this far future smarten up and just arm them with mini nuke warheads? Beats missiles!
Because point defence is very effictive at taking down limpets. So I imagine it would be as dangerous for the attacker as it would be for the defender if they where armed with nukes o7
Although I think you got your answer, I would like to add that I have experienced bugs with the cargohatch while being attacked by pirates with limpets.
In this scenario I did not have PD - limpets broke through - cargo hatch malfunctioned - I ejected my cargo - cargo got stuck on the way out without my knowledge - inventory read 0t - but the pirates in the area still demanded I drop x amount of cargo - I could still boost and cargo hatch read as closed but not jump to supercruise or other system or open my cargo hatch - reboot ship did nothing and could not repair or turn off cargohatch - I finally relogged and the cargo was back in the hold and everything worked again.
After this, I always fly with point defence.
