Do any HMDs support desktop cloning?

That's not quite right. I do want a VR device. I just don't want it to be limited to VR only.

I have an expectation that I should be able to use a head-mounted-display as a monitor. I am disappointed that the current crop of devices do not meet that expectation. [blah] Realistic or not, it is what I expect.

Is it possible to make the "desktop" stationary? (disable headlook? even by unplugging the sensor camera?) What about latency? Even 1 frame delay would ruin it's usefulness. Just wondering. Need to know for twitch-shooters.

Thanks!

The desktop is stationary but you can still move your head. Other wise you couldn't see other areas of the screen.

When you plug in the headset windows doesn't see it as monitor 2. I'm no expert but I think you would need MS to write that code into windows for that to work. Since is just a 1st gen unit I don't see that happening anytime soon. Hopefully if more people get on board with VR we can see a gen2 or 3 someday and then have WindowsVR edition.

After reading through this thread I've got to ask have you ever tried VR?

And you can, by using virtual desktop or big screen as many people have already told you. There would be very little point in disabling headtracking, the screen needs to be bigger than your FOV so you can view the text / picture clearly. Hence you would need head tracking enabled to be able to view the whole screen. You do not need the virtual screen to be in a virtual room / environment to use virtual desktop, you can just have a big floating screen with a black background if you wish.

There is no disable headtracking option - it defeats the point and purpose of the device. But I'm sure you could write something to block the tracking if you were so inclined.

You would likely need to play your 'twitch shooters' on your normal display anyway, the resolution of VR HMDs would not be good enough for you to pick out targets at a distance so you may as well forget about that expectation. VR HMDs are made for specifically created VR games and experiences - not 2D gaming. Well outside of VR desktop apps at least.

No offence but you seem to be missing the whole point of having a VR headset. Owning one does not force you into not being able to use you monitor any longer and its not like you could get rid of it anyway, its more of a case of using the right tool for the right job - a VR HMD for.. well - VR - and your display for all other content.
