Do away with prospector drones.

I like prospector limpets they allow me to mine faster and more efficiently.
Me too. I started using about 1 prospector for 10 collectors, now it's more like 1 for 2 in my minaconda.
(Can't seem to make top 70% for the CG, but every ton I deliver has been mined by myself)

I use 4 collectors at once but they last a good 4-5 mins, so for every 4 collectors I use, I use like 3-8 prospectors as I'm very picky and only mine the good stuff.

Drones in general seem a bit inefficient. Are there no tractor beams in the Elite universe?

No ..let's not get on that bandwagon again please.

Try running 4 limpets at once, I find they collect all the ore from an asteroid VERY fast :)

No. Luckily that is one of the few aspects of the game that hasn't been dumbed down for the kiddies.

How do you run 4?
I use a 5A controller, which seems to be the top one, but only 3 simultaneously.

Replace with a laser that is a solid beam which scans whatever rock its hitting.

Even better idea, lets keep the drones because they are great and allow you to scan multiple rocks at once.

A mining laser that can scan rocks takes to much time. You would not only be able to scan one rock at a time and you would have to be very close. If anything, that just sounds like the normal mining laser. You would "scan" by mining a piece off.

Yeah, lets tractor beam time item at a time. Way more efficient than have 4 drones pick everything up while your mining.

Two controller modules

Can't see how a tractor beam would pick them up faster than my 4 drones at once. Unless you want to really dumb it down to a "press X to collect ore" thing. ..no doubt some odd people would :p

Collectors are great, especially when you run multiple modules - 10 collectors basically collect everything possible in one go and slap it in your hull.

Probably agree about prospectors though, can't see how its faster than just shooting it with the mining laser otw past, would be better if they surveyed everything in an area around you then came back, sort of like the area collect mode.

No, let's keep them and instead expand their use by letting them paint up a "heat map" overlay on the asteroids which show where different resources are concentrated the most so you can target these areas and maximize your yield...as described in the mining design proposal. Nearly there! :)

This is a 100% better idea, and therefore has zero chance of implementation.

I think it would make more sense if your drones would occasionally stop to refuel from your ships' tanks, giving them a sort of "cooldown" interval. Then the challenge of drone-management would be how many to keep out at once and trying not to lose one.

IMO the only thing that could make mining better would be if you could "tag" a rock with a beacon-drone that would persist. Then occasionaly there could be super-rocks that were solid material that could be mined a great deal. The game-play would then be about finding a super-rock that was solid platinum, marking it, fending off others who were coming after it, jumping back to a station to sell the material and race back to find it, etc. I can imagine some great exciting times around such game-play.

When you shoot a prospector it shows up to the 3 types in the 'roid, and you can fire it from farther away. If you blast a few chunks off you can only see 2 types. I have tested this several times. The first few chunks were pretty worthless, like mid teen % of Indite or Gallite, but the rest of the chunks were like high 30% of something valuable. With the mining laser test, you could fly away from a 50% Painite 'roid because the first few chunks came out as 12% Gallite or something.
Prospector limpets FTW. They are very useful if used correctly.

My limpet loadout is usually 50% of my cargo hold. I'm somewhat picky with what I mine, I fire a prospector into every 'roid I plan to mine. I also run 4 limpets (2x class 3A) Most of the time I run low on limpets as my hold gets close to full.

Didn't know that you could operate multiple collector controllers, thanks. That's better than a single class 7, I need that slot for 128 cargo rack.
The limpets are much better for prospecting than a mining laser is. More range, more data, and able for multiple targets.
