Do away with request for landing.

Instead of requesting landing clearance, which is seldom denied, why not have the system automatically allow approach to land after the welcome message and designate a pad when within 5km's of the station, and the IF there is a operational issue deny landing clearance at 7.5 km's. This would simplify and do away with the cumbersome "request docking".

The year 3034 surely voiceless comms is the norm.

I hope this is a troll post.

Would you want the FAA to just let planes land and take of from airstrips willy nilly?
No
That puts lives at risk

Docking and taking off from a station is the exact same mindset

You may not always want to dock, or at least not immediately, and the pad would be reserved for the time frame regardless.

I’d propose the ability to map a key for the request.

Personally I use VoiceAttack, and just need to say “Request docking”.

What would you do if an armed commercial flight loaded with 500 tons of explosives is not listening to you?
What would happen today? (OK, both airport and aircraft are unarmed today.)

I often fly around stations waiting for a wingman to arrive, scanning wakes etc. It would annoy me to have ATC trying to assign me a landing pad and it would annoy anyone trying to land if all the pads were assigned to people who were just hanging about.

Key map for Docking request would be nice
This would be good. It would make sense to have to select your contact before asking permission IF you were in range of more than one potential place to dock but this does not happen (at least at the moment).

Ok, then have no docking request at all, why bother, If something is amiss then deny docking, that way you can orbit the station all day and not be bothered.

Cumbersome? I shudder to think what your keybinds look like. Docking Request for me is a <1 sec button combination that is so hardwired into my flying it happens without much of a thought. Case in point - I got my first trespass fine(s) in forever right after they moved the docking request button in 3.3(?).

My guess the Op had that issue of forgetting to ask for docking permission and get halfway in the mail slot and then find out they are trespassing.

It not hard to ask for docking permission.

I get fined for trespass all the time, but I don't think that's half as annoying as being denied clearance because all the pads are reserved. +1 for the keybind but I'll probably still forget all the time.
