Do buildings get dark inside? / Can you create dark rides?

Hi,

I am really looking forward to play Planet Coaster. I don't have a powerful enough PC yet, so I'll have to wait for a while to play it.

Anyway, I have a question: If you create a (closed) building, will it be completely dark inside, while it's still day outside? This is really important to me, because I really want to build dark rides. Making dark rides in RCT3 was impossible, because it would be dark inside at night only, which was really disappointing. I hope this will be fixed in Planet Coaster. :)

Unfortunately, somehow daylight and moon light still manages to penetrate through the show buildings. Kind of a bummer because it would be nice for it to be fully dark, that way we can make use of our own lighting to light the sets.

There is some good news; rides under ground are dark during the day time with working lights. You could create a building above ground and bury the queue and ride under to get functional dark rides during the day time.

Indeed, landscape has been made to block the light. Building's don't.

But who knows what the future might hold... Frontier stated they would love to do darkrides but it's a difficult process.

Interestingly, the audio is already there. When you build an enclosed (or partially enclosed) space with walls and a roof, it sounds like you're inside a building.
The systems are probably way different but if it works with sound, it has to work with light at some point in the future as well, right? [big grin]

That's interesting if you've noticed that! I'll need to check that out myself later. It sounds like thats a big step towards darkrides, and that makes me happy. [big grin]

I colored my walls BLACK, to make it look like it's dark inside my Movie theater

Can you not pull terrain close to walls; so if you made a cube with walls 2m apart all the way around and raised the terrain then remove the inner or out walls if you want it to look natural and keep them for a building effect. It is of course thicker than it needs to really be if you do that but would resolve the darkness side for now if possible.

Adam

No,sadly it only works under the normal terrain height[blah]

Have we got confirmation on this? Such an immersion breaker if it doesn't get changed.

There hasn't been any news of this in the last weeks i think.

As far as we know it's just as in the alpha's. Building parts dont make it darik inside but terrain does.

This is basically what I did with one of my rides as I wanted both the outside and the inside look like a building... so built the inside walls / roof - then enclosed it all with a layer of terrain - and then built the outside of the walls/roof - yes it makes the walls thicker, but it's the only way to get it dark and still be on the surface.

Does that actually make it dark then, even above normal terrain height?

If it does I might try that with my indoor coaster this weekend.

It does not, you will only get total darkness when you are below foundation/default ground level.

I tested it above ground, multiple walls, huge black box, terrain wrapped around it, and still light inside.

It does [cool]

It gets dark inside terrain :)

How? Can you show a picture?

Strange, I have a mountain above the normal level and it's pitch black in there. the only light I see is from the torches and from the holes where the coaster pops outside of the mountain.

I always had the idea that dark rides could be a simple matter of choosing where your track is "light" and where it is "dark" by selecting sections and switching a toggle. To the guests riding it, they don't actually care how it renders for you, but they can know when their car is passing through dark track and light track and react accordingly. As for the player, it would be easy enough to change the environmental light depending on whether the currently viewed coaster train is on a section of dark track.

Well, after spending 1/2 an hour creating a "Modern Art" cover for the station for my ride, I can say... It was a waste of time. So then I built the terrain around and over it, and then pushed it back past the scenery in the station. It definitely made the station darker, and the lights came on, but it is not completely dark (it could be from the holes where the coaster enters/exits the station). Of course it does not look realistic having an outpost under ground, but it is better then how it was before. I will do some more work on it and see how it goes.
