Do groups work? My friend and I are constantly split into seperate instances.

My friend and I were trying to play together all last night we confirmed our server IP was the same, and we joined a private group, but we still wouldn't stay together as we jumped between systems.

We would be together when we first logged on, but then often when we jumped into another system we would be split, until a few jumps later when we would see each other again.

It seems like if there is a whole forum to finding groups, it would be possible to actually play with another person.

What are we doing wrong, how can I play elite with my friend? it seems impossible currently.

Yes Groups do work - I have been in sessions with 16 players in them during the gamma.

Some of the matchmaking is I think based on relative computer/network matching, so that someone who has a lower rated computer or internet connection doesn't cause problems to those with higher ratings.

I think I'm right in saying that the initial idea of groups was to "slave" drives together but this has now been abandoned. I'm not sure how they are planning to do it at the moment. The issue being it's all too easy to get separated into different instances.

Are there any tips to staying together? How in the world did your 16 player group stay together? Luck?

Literally we'll be sitting right next to each other, jump into a new system within seconds of each other, and then *poof* we're split.

I say no it dosen´t work!
My Friend and I have the same Provider with the same Speed (100mbit/s), but we come not in the same instance. We have a group and are "friends".

We have the same problem with our group. we just can't find each other. Also is there planned something like group pathing or something?

hmmm well my friend and i have the exact same connection from same isp we live about 300meters apart with roughly the same computer setup, we had trouble in beta 1 but we managed to get it working but since beta1 we dont see each other anymore and we are in a closed group. can hardly use comms for the [x] and sometimes cant even see each other as being online even when we are both chatting on teamspeak.

being in a 16 player group is not the same as being in a 16 player group and being able to see all 16 players in the same area.
the skynet approach to having a server might work on paper but just doesn't really cut it in reality, maybe someone from FD can tell us all how to set our ports and firewalls in order to see each other 100% of the time

I have had similar problems, although we seem to have it sussed out now. I might record a video of how its done tonight.

It's a Mess, an absolute mess. I think Frontier knows it too.

At the launch party we were treated to a scripted play session where people were jumping in to help friends. It looked epic, but thats all it did; in reality is all smoke and mirrors..

My friend and I tried group play tonight, both in the same system, cant see each other. Both at the same station, both given the same pad to land on. Because we are in different instances of the same world. In the end we switched to open play, not that it made one iota of a different.

Elite Dangerous gives the illision of multiplayer game you can play with your friends, the reality is it's the biggest single player MMO out there. :(

Hopefully they will work on it and deliver what we saw in the "live" demo at the launch party. I want a system where my friends and I can travel / explore / fight / trade / mine together.

Please do. A buddy of mine and I are "friends" in the game and we started our own private group.... we have seen each other in the game, but we don't see the same targets....

They work but its a little tricky to get into the same instance, my brother n I had to get into the same station and after that go a different system then we went into the NAV POINT of that system and then we were able to get connected it just takes like 3mins to get connected.

Too late I spooted this thread - I have just said to my old friend to come and join ED so we can fly together. He is very much on buying the game so now I just hope I won't fail him :)
Looking forward to seeing what's happening in group multiplayer.

Please do. I'm sure many would find it useful.

Right now the game is completely broken for my friends and I. We didn't intend to all preorder a single player game together.

My understanding is that with "Wings" arriving in early 2015 wing mates will be forced into the same instances (presumably if someone has a poor connection, then tough). The drive slaving was dropped in favour of making it easier for wing mates to see each other (I assume different coloured hud and sensor blips), see each other's status and to follow each other out of SC (i.e. improve the existing wake following mechanic and then make it even easier for wing mates to drop in, widening the drop criteria from <1Mm and <1Mm/s has been mentioned).

Matchmaking? You're joking right? There's really no such thing in this game.

@OP - don't let these guys fool you. There are literally no multiplayer features that currently function as you'd expect [from any other MP game you've ever played, MMO or otherwise], and group play is a hot mess.

There's really no such thing as a group - you can enter the game together, but good luck staying together.

Wow. Just... wow. The fact that this would even need to be done to do something as basic as getting into a group to play the same ???MULTIPLAYER??? game is just sad, and a testament to how broken the MP is.

The poster above who mentioned that he and his friend can see each other but not the same targets?? I won't begin my rant from the view of a developer as to what that means about what FD has done (or not done) to this game in terms of matchmaking and MP.

If you can see each other and not the same targets, it means MP doesn't even exist. There's a LOT that needs to be missing to have completely independent AIs and yet still see each other.

This is not accurate in practical play at all. It simply does not work that slick and you shouldn't be telling people it does.

I have yet to consistently land in the same instance as a friend. I don't even bother checking if anyone is online anymore. You can use shift wakes but that requires being in the same instance. Which getting to that point can be a exercise in futility. If it does work with some workarounds a lot of people don't know them and they are not apparent and essentially, not there. Disingenuous post.

And I was already worried ;-)

Groups do work me and my 5 m8s are in a group but it will take us over 2 months to actually reach each other we are so far apart.
