Do I have to unlock all engineers in a specific order?

To my understanding, if you got the invite and meet the listed requirements, then it is up to you where you go. That being said only a few engineers are available at the beginning, and over time you get more.

No specific order for all engineers - but they are organized into 5 groups, some larger, some smaller, and as you progress with one engineer in one group, you get access to the next engineer(s) in that group.
So, it won't help you to have unlocked The Sarge as the highest Engineer in Felicity's group if you want to do business with Prof. Palin - you'll have to go through that specific group, starting with Elvira Martuuk and swearing at the game (and/or the forums) when you discover the requirement for Marco Qwent...

While we are at it, what is the point having Professor Palin and Chloe Sedisi, both offering exactly the same engineering, or do I miss something?

Currently it lets you pin two different drive blueprints at Grade 5 at the same time, one each, there is speculation that Chloe might learn new tricks in the future.

While it is slightly disappointing that they are so identical it is useful to have another source of good drives a single source of supply is always a vulnerability.

Reminds me I need to re-pin my dirty drive blueprint with the Prof.

Location location location..
Palin is in the bubble, Chloe is at the witch head nebula.

Christ on a harley....

Feeling stupid! I never even tried to pin more than one blue print.... So you can pin one per engineer? LOL Could have spared me a bucket load of jumps....

Thanks Gentlemen!

Yes one blueprint per engineer however sometimes the pin falls out and you have to go back and hammer it in again, and of course you can’t apply special effects or improve your standing with an engineer remotely.

On a related note, do you have to start on G1 of something (for example powerplant) and work through different engineers to G5, or can you make everything up to grade X for a certain engineer? For example Felicity can make G1-G5 FSD?

It's complicated (not really, but to explain in words...).

First of all, each Engineer has limited capabilities/specializations. Next, you have a certain standing/reputation with each Engineer individually. If you improve your reputation with Felicity to Level 5, she will do all modifications up to level 5, as far as she can - level 5 for FSD and level 3 for Thrusters, for example. This won't have any connection to your reputation with any other Engineer (apart from her telling you about Juri somewhere around level 2.5).

Is this somewhat comprehensible? Otherwise, just do it.

Yes to a certain degree which is to say, some Engineers require you to unlock and reach a certain level with another Engineer before they will send you an invitation.

I wondered why I was struggling to get my cannons up to grade 5?
