Newcomer / Intro Do I need a Basic Discovery Scanner for the "initial scan"?

By "initial scan" I mean "point your nose to an 'Unexplored' planet and wait for a bit then data pop up".

I believe objects get "discovered" by just being in close proximity to them, and looking at them (like the star, when you warp in).
So in theory you can do without the scanner.

No, that is your discovery scanner doing a passive scan for nearby objects.

So in theory you can do without the scanner.

No theory here, been there, done that. No scanner = no exploration.

In my opinion, it is not worth selling it just to gain another slot or two of cargo space. I feel the same way about shields, but of course many people would disagree with me.
