Engineers Do I need a basic discovery scanner to land on planets?

I downloaded horizons this morning, so I run out to Maia to get some Meta Alloys. I'm looking for darnielles progress, and apparently I have to land on some planet, I don't see any planets, just stars, and they are all undiscovered. I was told it's Maia A2A I have to land on, but when I set my filter to landing surfaces moons/planets, nothing shows up. Is this because I don't have a basic discovery scanner? Am I going to have to hop all the way back to the bubble for a basic scanner? Or am I just not doing it correctly?

I know which one it's supposed to be, I used eddb and it looks like it's the planet right best to obsidian orbital, according to the distances it gave me. But it shows as a star, not a planet?

Any help is appreciated.

edit.: I tried getting close to this object I think is Maia A2A, to see if anything popped up. I just kept getting close proximity drops.

I don't have one and can land on planets, just approach it and start descending, you will switch to Orbital Cruise automatically if it is a planet you can land on.

You will need a disco scanner to scan the system once, and then its in your nav computer. Alternatively, check in the Galaxy Map to see if you can purchase the data for that system.

Disco Scanners are useful if you are travelling to places you've never been to before. If you've found a home planet for yourself, and have scanned all the nearby systems already, you could think about switching it out for something else.

Can you scan the nav beacon for the same effect or will it resolves all objects as Unexplored too?

Ok, apparently I'll have to go get one, because alls I'm seeing here in Maia is stars and obsidian orbital. Every undiscovered object is a star. So I have no clue where darnielles progress is. I've used an advanced discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner for exploring, I have that setup on my Cobra. I just don't have any discovery scanner on my python.

They are showing up in my navigation menu as unexplored, so someone has scanned with an advanced discovery scanner already, they just haven't scanned each object. That's what's weird. If I set my filter to landfall planets and moons, nothing shows up. But if I set it to stars, I get 8 undiscovered objects. You can't land on stars, and there's no planets showing up?

Darnielle's progress (IIRC - someone please correct me if im wrong!) is the base on the planet closest to Obsidian Orbital and IIRC you can clearly see it from the station. Last time I was there (a day or so after 2.1 launched) I seem to also recall that the planets in that system had not been scanned with an advanced discovery scanner - which struck me as weird.

If you have an advanced discovery scanner you do not need to get a basic one! That would be a downgrade.

Just scan the different unexplored bodies. They should show up in your nav list as planets and the details should be populated in the system map. Planets, stars etc shows as unexplored for you until they are scanned even if someone else has done it before, unless you purchase the exploration data.

If you have an advanced discovery scanner and you 'honk' it should have found all the objects in the system. If you are looking at the system map and it looks to be all stars then it sounds like you have a wierd bug.

Yes that's the one I've tried to approach, but it shows up as a star on my hud, and in my navigation menu when I set filters, no planets or landing surfaces show up, besides the Nav beacon and a RES site.

Ok, I found the planet. It wasn't showing up in the navigation menu, and I couldnt select it even when flying straight towards it. I'm in suborbital flight, flying over the surface, how do I find darnielles progress? I'm not seeing anything in the Nav menu, clearing filters and reset filters and still no station. Do I just fly around aimlessly looking for it? I don't know why the planet wasn't showing up in the Nav menu, or why I couldn't select it when flying towards it.

That's not how it works. Just because someone's scanned something doesn't mean you'll see the details, only that you'll see their name next to it of they've scanned and claimed it first. You need to scan everything yourself, as you've no doubt found out.

Ive never had to scan for stations though, I didn't know how this works with stations on planets. I can't even select this planet, if I'm flying straight towards it only a few LS away, like you would a ship, planet, star or anything else. It won't let me select it. I'm flying around this Planet. In sub orbital flight, and I don't see any station. I guess I need to go get a discovery scanner fitted, and see if that helps. I didn't know you had to scan a planet to find stations on that planet, I was just curious if I was doing something wrong. Because I'm flying around this planet in sub orbital flight, that obsidian orbital is circling around, and there is absolutely no station showing up in my menu.

Ran into the same problem a few days ago, it's a bug. Selecting the planet / station from the system map did the trick for me.

Thank you. Although, there's no system info yet, so I'll have to go back to the bubble. I may as well just get my cobra with the advanced discovery setup on it, if I have to fly that far back anyways. The only station in the entire galaxy/space that sells meta alloys, and it won't show up. Lol. Hopefully it will let me select the planet to scan it, I couldn't select it in my python.

Just to let everyone know, I put a advanced discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner on my python( I didn't feel like running the extra 200 LY for my cobra) and it worked. It showed the station and I just picked up my meta alloys. By the way, that was my first landing on a planet, and it was really cool. I can't wait to check out what some of the other planets look like.

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it. One last thing, I'm really surprised no one has explored this Maia system, it has a lot of stuff in it, including an unscanned black hole, which I'm on my way to now. It's my first one I'll see. Edit: well I just scanned it, and you really can't see anything! It's still neat to be able to scan one though.

It shows unexplored to YOU, other people have scanned it, I know I have. Next time just drop out of super cruise into the nav beacon and select it while being ~1km out from it. It will scan the beacon and reveal all the planets and stuff for you, no need to get a different ship. Unless of course there is no nav beacon, but I am fairly sure there is one in Maia.
